The White House faced strong Congressional opposition on a proposed plan to send Americans gas cards to help those struggling with the rising prices at the pump, according to reports by Axios. The plan comes as a response to the average cost per gallon rising above $4 for the first time since 2008 last week.
- Political pressure: has been increasing on the White House every day that goes by that gas prices continue to rise. Democrats are now desperately seeking policy solutions to combat the rising gas prices as the midterm elections draw closer. Republicans are expected to use inflation and gas prices as a core component of campaigns in districts nationwide to win back the House and Senate this Fall.
- The failed plan: was for the IRS to send gas card to America. The plan was short lived and faced harsh backlash from many members of the democratic caucus. A House Democratic counsel laid out a list of reasons the plan was highly flawed, including: expenses and poor targeting, potential to worsen inflation and would have minimal impact on reducing costs, delivering of the cards would be slow, and the process could slow down the IRS as the final date to file 2021 tax returns approaches.
- What the White House is saying: “There’s a variety of ideas being discussed to ensure that the costs American families are feeling at the pump are as minimal as possible,” said White House spokesperson Vedant Patel to Axios.
