Thursday, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin requested that state legislators come together to suspend the state’s gas tax to provide relief to working-class families struggling to keep up with the rising prices at the pump. The proposed move would save drivers 26 cents per gallon at a time where prices have sored to more than $4 per gallon for the first time since 2008.
- Some democrats not on board: with Youngkin’s proposal, arguing that consumers would not benefit from the short-term tax reduction that would cut funding for infrastructure across the state.
- State Sen. Scott Surovell (D): “We are way behind on building infrastructure in Northern Virginia. Whether you are talking about metro extensions, road widenings, intersections [and] we have a one billion dollar bike plan we need to implement in the DMV.”
- What’s next: the proposal would need to be approved by the Virginia General Assembly, which remains deeply divided following their first session that saw a number of votes fall directly on partisan lines.
