The Democrats plan to combat skyrocketing inflation is currently on hold due to in-fighting amongst Members of the Democratic Caucus. The hold comes as tensions between Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin continue to escalate.
- The current plan: is to raise an estimated $45 billion by increasing taxes on major oil companies and returning them to consumers by way of energy rebates, according to a report by The Hill.
- The hold up: is a result of Sen. Manchin’s opposition to the plan. He has served as the most important swing vote in the Democratic Caucus and was considered to be largely responsible for the death of Biden’s Build Back Better plan. Sen. Manchin has made it clear that he is more interested in supporting oil producers to help bring more product to the market. “I just want people to produce the products we need to get us through this crisis,” said Sen. Manchin.
