Rep. Andy Harris on Zelensky’s Address to Congress:

By WMAL.com

On Wednesday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky hosted a virtual address to Congress pleading for U.S. support as Russia’s invasion into Ukraine continues to rage. While the address only lasted about 15 minutes it was highly emotional and focused on making the war in his country hit home for Members of Congress.

Congressman Andy Harris joined O’Connor & Company to respond to Zelesnky’s address to Congress: “over the next few days we are going to figure out exactly what role we are going to play … the main decision is whether or not to re-assess our decision not to provide Soviet aircrafts from NATO countries to Ukraine … the next [decision] will have to be to whether or not to provide advance service air missiles to Ukraine. I hope we do both of those things. I don’t think we should have American pilots flying in a no-fly-zone, but the alternative is give the Ukrainians the equipment to [enforce] their own no-fly-zone.

  • Zelesnky’s world tour: Wednesday’s address to Congress comes on the heels of the Ukrainian president meeting with the Canadian and British Parliament over the past week. The goal of these meetings has been to galvanize the western world to support his war-torn country during these trying times.
  • Hitting close to home: “Remember Pearl Harbor, the terrible morning of Dec. 7, 1941, when your sky was black from the planes attacking you … Remember Sept. 11, a terrible day in 2001 when evil tried to turn your cities, independent territories, into battlefields. When innocent people were attacked from the air,” said Zelensky to Members in attendance. He continued, “Our country is experiencing the same every day, right now, at this moment,” he said. “Every night for three weeks now … Russia has turned the Ukrainian sky into a source of death for thousands of people.”

  • Increased sanctions on Russia: was one of Zelensky’s primary pleas to Congress, “every week until the Russian military machine stops.”
  • No-fly zone: while Zelensky recognized that this is a red line for U.S. he requested, once again, that Congress impose a no-fly zone on Russia. He also requested surface-to-air missile systems as an alternative for Ukraine to defend itself from arial assault.
