Virginia Congressional Candidates Utilize Youngkin Education Strategy

Candidates across Northern Virginia are looking to take a page out of the Governor Youngkin playbook when it comes to messaging on education. Governor Youngkin was able to successfully galvanize voters around the issue of parental choice, banning CRT and mask mandates to secure his victory over Terry McAuliffe this past year.

  • Mask mandates: the Youngkin administration successfully overturned the mandates in a fierce battle with the county school boards in Northern Virginia. The victory caught the attention of the national media, and Republican candidates are vocalizing their support for a similar parent-first agenda when it comes to a child’s education.
  • What they are saying: “The list of grievances is long, and victories on some of these issues are unlikely to entirely mitigate the levels of justified anger that I have seen from parents at these meetings,” said Prince William County Supervisor Jeanine Lawson (R) and candidate for the 10th congressional district.
