The outspoken Democratic nominee for governor in Texas Beto O’Rourke came out against the teaching of Critical Race Theory (CRT) in Texas in a speech over the weekend. His statements mark a transition away from the progressive policies he ran on in 2020 in his failed bid for the democratic nomination for president.
- What he said: “And I think you and I are probably on the same page as well. We don’t see CRT being taught in our schools right now. It is a course that is taught in law schools,” said O’Rourke to a crowd in Victoria, Texas on Friday.
- Democrats distancing themselves: from CRT is a trend that O’Rourke followed on Friday. This has proven to be especially true for moderate-Democrats running in red states. Progressives continue to support the integration of the curriculums in public schools.
- Report data: collected by the Manhattan Institute shows CRT is widely supported by moderate voters. “An overwhelming majority of voters of all political stripes oppose certain Critical Race Theory– inspired teaching methods, such as separating children by race into ‘privileged’ and ‘oppressed’”.
