Texas Democrats are calling for President Biden to increase the production of domestic oil in response to rising gas prices. The calls echo those of many Americans who believe the U.S. should be making moves to more toward foreign energy independence.
- What they are saying: “We cannot wait for tomorrow to do what needs to be done today … We must unleash responsible domestic production to counter reliance on Russian oil and gas, while simultaneously cutting off Russia’s largest source of revenue. Now is the time to regain our energy independence and support our allies around the globe,” the group of Texas democrats said in a letter to President Biden.
- Rep. Vincente Gonzalez (D-TX): is leading the charge on this letter, along with democratic caucus colleagues Sylvia Garcia, Henry Cuellar and Filemon Vela.
- Increased call for action: Democrats in Congress are facing increased pressure from voters in their districts to take action to lower gas prices and secure America’s energy future. With midterms coming this fall gas prices is sure to be a key issue across the country.
