In a video message on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a pledge to stay in the war-torn city of Kyiv, telling the world he plans to stand his ground in the capital city of his home country.
- Zelensky: “Now I will say one thing: I stay here. I stay in Kyiv. On Bankova Street. I’m not hiding. And I’m not afraid of anyone. As much as it takes to win this Patriotic War of ours,” Zelensky said from the video.
- Continuing to fight back: despite Russia’s increased efforts to overtake Kyiv and dwindling military supplies for the Ukrainian troops that country continues to fight.
- Peace talks: thus far have been unsuccessful. Zelensky noted: “we will insist on negotiations until we find a way to tell our people: This is how we will come to peace. Exactly to peace.”
- 2,000: the number of Ukrainian civilians who have been killed since the invasion began.
- 1.7 million: the number of refugees who have fled their home country of Ukraine seeking safety in neighboring European countries. This is the largest refugee crisis since World War II, according to the UN.
Today marks the 13th day since Russia invaded Ukraine.
