WASHINGTON–The 5th annual Women’s March will take place at Freedom Plaza and in front of the Supreme Court on Saturday. The topic? Abortion rights.
Washington, D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine is now inviting those who want to have an abortion, regardless where in the nation they live to come and have the procedure here.
“In the District we value reproductive rights, and we are open for care to those who live here and those traveling from other states,” Racine said.
He points to the passage of legislation that has outlawed the practice of terminating a pregnancy as his reasoning. Most recently, Texas law SB 8.
“Laws stripping patients of their rights, like the Texas abortion ban, do not apply to patients getting care here or to anyone in the District helping patients get care. Texas’ unconstitutional law should be overturned, and as we fight it and other abortion restrictions in the courts, Saturday’s march will be a clear reminder to leaders and our country that reproductive rights matter,” Racine added.
An organizer of the Women’s March tells WMAL they’re expecting around 10,000 participants. At the same time, the group Students for Life of America will stage a counter protest.
“This isn’t a ‘women’s’ march, it’s an abortion march at which radical feminists sell out women by throwing away all issues except ending preborn life. The message that women must choose between career and family is modern misogyny that undercuts all of us,” President Kristan Hawkins said.
