WASHINGTON– Michele Ridge, the wife of former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge says her husband remains in critical, but stable condition after suffering a stroke on Wednesday morning at their home in Bethesda.
He later had a blood clot removed.
Mrs. Ridge posted an update via the former Pennsylvania Governor’s Twitter account.
“We are hopeful for a full recovery while recognizing he will have a long road ahead, no doubt. But we take comfort and strength from knowing what a determined fighter Tom is and that he has come back strong from health challenges in the past,” she wrote.

Mrs. Ridge thanked the medical staff who helped get Tom to the hospital and “the nurses, doctors and staff who are working with compassion and car to help Tom in the early stages of his recovery”.
She says the amount of support and well-wishes the family has received has been “overwhelming”. “Please keep your prayers coming,” Mrs. Ridge wrote.
Ridge, 75, served as Pennsylvania’s Republican governor from 1995 to 2001. Following the terror attacks, he was named the country’s first Homeland Security Secretary by President George W. Bush.
