It’s time to name that panda! Just about three months after the Smithsonian National Zoo’s baby panda cub arrived to the delight of Washingtonians, it’s time to decide what to call him.
You have four choices which were picked by Zoo staff and their counterparts in China: Fu Zai, which is Mandarin for prosperous boy; Xiao Qi ji, which is Mandarin for little miracle; Xing Fu, which is Mandarin for happy and prosperous; and Zai Zai, which is Mandarin for boy.
“Little miracle, which seems so appropriate since we were not necessarily expecting this little cub. He’s our miracle during COVID,” said zoo spokesperson Pamela Baker-Masson.
No panda around the world has any of the names on the list. Baker-Masson said since the pandas are international sensations, they don’t give two pandas the same name.
You can vote here from Monday through Friday, Nov. 20. The cub will be officially named Monday, Nov. 23.
