Phase One of reopening Virginia could start at the end of next week, Northam says (Richmond.com)

Virginia could move onto the first phase of the state’s reopening by the end of the next week, if current COVID-19 trends hold, Gov. Ralph Northam announced Monday.

Northam announced he would expand an executive order mandating the closure of recreational businesses, including gyms and laboratories, from May 8 until May 14. At that point, Northam said, he expects the state will be ready to start lifting some public restrictions as part of a phased reopening. [Read More]

Three Maryland lawmakers, along with pastors and multiple businesses across the state, are suing Gov. Larry Hogan over two executive orders implemented statewide amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Jovita Carranza and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven T. Mnuchin today issued the following statement on the success of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP):

“The Paycheck Protection Program is providing critical support to millions of small businesses and tens of millions of hardworking Americans.

“Since Round 2 of PPP loan processing began on April 27, 2.2 million loans have been made to small businesses which surpasses the number of all loans made in PPP Round 1. The total value of these 2.2 million loans is over $175 billion. Notably, the average loan size in Round 2 is $79,000, yet another indicator that the program is broadly based and assisting the smallest of small businesses. [Read More]

 

China is eclipsing US in Asia, Donald Trump adviser says (The Times)

China is expanding its domination of east Asia as it seeks to eclipse American influence and undermine its allies in the region, says one of President Trump’s closest unofficial advisers.

Jack Keane, 77, a retired general, spoke of his concerns after recent incidents in which Chinese vessels harassed an oil-drilling ship operated by a British-based company, and the claims by Beijing last week that it had “expelled” a US warship from the South China Sea. [Read More]
