DETROIT (AP) – Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden is joining a growing call for the release of comprehensive racial data amid the coronavirus pandemic.
He says the virus has put a spotlight on inequity and the impact of “structural racism” on communities of color.
He made the comments in a Medium post Thursday. An analysis published Wednesday by The Associated Press found that black Americans are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis found that of the 3,300 COVID-19 victims whose demographic data was shared by officials, about 42% were black.
Black people account for roughly 21% of the total population in the areas covered by the analysis.
