WASHINGTONâFor BJ Treuting, Saturday night was 7 years in the making.
The Manassas Park native who recently moved to New Orleans, made a promise in 2012 that he wouldnât shave his face until the Washington Nationals won the World Series.
Following the teamâs victory parade, Treuting and a few dozen friends and supporters gathered at the Salt Line in Navy Yard to watch his beard be shaved off.
Treuting says while he always enjoyed a good barber shave, keeping this vow was important for another reasonâwanting to set a good example.
âI was teaching at Manassas Park Middle School and I was coachingâŠand I was very very big of making sure youâre accountable and that if you say youâre going to do something, you follow through and do it. It would be a really really poor example for the kids I taught and coached if I saidâŠhey you really should be doing that. And then, here I am making a promise and not staying by my word.â
He says for now heâll continue to shave, but doesnât rule out growing back some facial hair in the future.
Meanwhile, his mother, Anna Treuting says sheâs thrilled the beard is gone.
âAll I kept thinking was oh please let them win⊠please let them win. And every year I was likeâŠoh I gotta deal another year with this thingâ.
Still, Anna saved a clump of her sonâs beard. âThis is going in hisâŠnot really baby book. But I figured Iâd give it to him and he can do what he wants with it. â
The shave-off was more than just a promise kept, it also helped to raise money for the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. If youâd like to donate to the cause :https://bit.ly/325qvrS
