WASHINGTON– If you’ve spent any time on social media this week, chances are you’ve seen someone share a story saying if you leave a water bottle in your car in direct sunlight it could start a fire.

With the heat index in the triple digits, the story started to heat up on sites like facebook.

Michael Yourishin, a spokesman for the Prince George’s Co. Fire & EMS tells WMAL not to believe everything you read online.

“It’s perfectly safe to leave your water bottle in the car,” Yourishin said.

While he acknowledged it’s possible, he’s also quick to say “It’s highly unlikely anything like that would happen”.

Yourishin added that there’s never been a report for this type of car fire in Prince George’s county.

He recommends in this heat that you take your water bottle with you, because you need to stay hydrated.
