Congress created the Sept. 11th Victim Compensation Fund after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to help anyone injured or sickened in the attacks or in the response process. “As I sit here today, I can’t help but think what an incredible metaphor this room is for the entire process that getting health care and benefits for 9/11 first responders has come to,” Stewart told a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee. “Behind me, a filled room of 9/11 first responders, and in front of me, a nearly empty Congress.”

Raising Congressional pay “may not be politically popular to say but honestly this is why there’s so much pressure to turn to lobbying firms and to cash in on member service after people leave because precisely of this issue,” she said, according to Fox News.

- Glacier National Park quietly removed a visitor center sign saying its iconic glaciers will disappear by 2020 due to climate change.
- Several winters of heavy snowfall threw off climate model projections the glaciers would all disappear by 2020, according to federal officials.
- A blogger first noticed the signage change and noted other signs warning of “impending glacier disappearance have been replaced.”
6am – F More tourists flocking to Chernobyl nuclear disaster site thanks to HBO show (Washington Post) Ukraine’s Chernobyl might be on track to become 2019′s surprise tourism destination, after a widely discussed HBO miniseries resulted in a surge in bookings for trips to the site and the nearby town that were abandoned after a major nuclear accident in 1986. Trip bookings for May 2019 were 30 percent higher than May 2018, and were up over the next three months, as well, said Sergii Ivanchuk, director of SoloEast Travel, which organizes trips to the nuclear power plant and its surrounding areas. Another tour company, CHERNOBYLwel.com, confirmed that its numbers had also increased. On their tours, visitors usually head to the abandoned town of Pripyat, next to the power plant, which was evacuated within hours, and other sites, including the former power plant itself. Radiation levels during the trips are considered to be safe, but the area around the power plant remains largely uninhabited.
