UPDATE 1:15 p.m. (WMAL) – The driver came forward and has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident. He called police and said he did stop and got out of his car, but the child ran away. At that point, the driver left for work. Police said the cause of the crash was pedestrian error because the driver was not required to stop since the bus was on the other side of a divided highway.

WASHINGTON (WMAL) – The search is on for a driver who hit a kid getting on a school bus in Laurel Thursday morning and drove off.

Around 7 Thursday morning an 8-year-old was getting on a bus near Shoreline Boulevard and Bayou Bend in Laurel when a dark-colored SUV hit the child according to Anne Arundel County Police spokesperson Marc Limansky.

The child was taken to a local pediatric center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Limansky said police talked to some people at the scene who saw what happened but are asking anyone else who can give them a description of the car or driver to call them. Anyone who lives nearby and has a security camera is also asked to contact police.

Anne Arundel County Schools spokesperson Maneka Monk said about 24 students were getting on the bus headed to Monarch Global Academy when the child was hit.

Monk said some of the school busses have cameras, but she didn’t know if this one did.

Children who were on the bus or boarding it when the child was hit met with a counselor when they got to school.
