5am – A/B/C Listener Reaction To The Findings Of The Mueller Report:
- MUELLER REPORT’S RELEASE MAY NOT BE THE END OF RUSSIA HYSTERIA: The public release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Thursday marked the dramatic final note of a lengthy and contentious investigation, but also sparked new calls for subpoenas, congressional testimony, resignations, and even impeachment proceedings — all despite the probe’s central finding that no evidence showed that President Trump’s team “coordinated or conspired” with Russia … The whirlwind moments kept coming, even hours after the report’s release, as more and more revelations from the 448-page document trickled out. The White House, for its part, claimed total victory and vindication for the president who, according to the report, once fretted that the special counsel’s appointment meant he was “f—ed” beyond the possibility of redemption and that his agenda would be derailed by partisan distractions. But Democrats and media outlets that long advanced the idea that the Trump campaign had treasonously worked with Russia — and anticipated that the Trump administration would collapse — quickly pivoted to whether the president had, instead, interfered with the now-completed investigation. Within minutes of the report’s publication, House Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., charged that the special counsel had provided “disturbing evidence that President Trump engaged in obstruction of justice” and, referencing the report’s limited redactions, wondered: “Imagine what remains hidden from our view.” Nadler immediately called on Mueller himself to testify, and top Republicans, including Trump personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and Attorney General William Barr, said they would have no objections to him doing so. He also announced he would subpoena the full, unredacted version of the Mueller report and any underlying grand jury evidence, setting up a likely legal confrontation with the Justice Department.
- TRUMP, SUPPORTERS REPEAT CALL TO INVESTIGATE THE INVESTIGATORS: President Trump and his legal team declared victory after Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report was released, with the president repeating his “no collusion” mantra and saying “this should never happen to another president again” … “I’m having a good day, too, it’s called ‘no collusion, no obstruction,’” he said in remarks for the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride, at the White House. “There never was by the way, and there never will be.” Trump also added, “This should never happen to another president again, this hoax, it should never happen to another president again.” He also promised “to get to the bottom of these things,” hinting at calls for the origins of the two-year investigation to be reviewed.
- Byron York: Mueller, Trump, and ‘two years of bulls***’ (Washington Examiner) –– Did the Trump campaign conspire, coordinate, or collude with Russia to influence the 2016 election? Mueller has concluded that did not happen. Everything else in the Trump-Russia affair flowed from that one question. Paul Manafort’s shady finances would not have come under investigation were it not for that question. Carter Page would not have been wiretapped were it not for that question. Michael Flynn would not have been interviewed by the FBI were it not for that question. Zillions of hours on cable TV would not have been expended on Trump-Russia were it not for that question. And in the largest sense, there would have been no Mueller investigation were it not for that question. And now Mueller has determined there was no collusion. Not that there was no criminal collusion. Or no prove-beyond-a-reasonable-doubt collusion. Just no collusion.
- COMEY HAS “SO MANY QUESTIONS“: Former FBI Director James Comey had “so many answers” on Thursday following the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, after he initially tweeted that he had “so many questions.” Comey claimed to have answers after the Justice Department publicly released a redacted version of Mueller’s report regarding his investigation into the Trump campaign and possible collusion with Russia. It marked the dramatic end of a lengthy and contentious investigation but also rang in a new round of partisan fighting.
5am – D Kim Foxx’s chief ethics officer, integrity unit director resign following Smollett controversy. (Fox News) – CHICAGO – Two ranking executives inside the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office have submitted their resignations — including State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s chief ethics officer, April Perry, whom Foxx cited as the person who advised her to “recuse” herself from the Jussie Smollett case that has rocked the Chicago office, Fox News learned Thursday. Mark Rotert, the director of the office’s Conviction Integrity Unit, has also submitted his resignation, according to a Foxx spokesperson. Perry and Rotert are scheduled to work their last days on the job in May. “While I feel lucky to have been able to spend the last 15 years of my career in public service, I am looking forward to my next endeavor in the private sector where I have the opportunity to continue to work toward increasing the safety of our community,” Perry wrote in an April 15 letter obtained by Fox News via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Chicago’s top prosecutor has been criticized for how she handled Smollett’s criminal case — including her questionable recusal and how her office suddenly dropped the charges against the 36-year-old “Empire” actor on March 26.
5am – E Mossimo Giannulli lied about attending USC in the ’80s, took parents’ tuition money. (Page Six) — T-shirt designer Mossimo Giannulli — who’s been accused of paying bribes to get his daughters into the University of Southern California — has spoken out about how he lied to his own parents about attending the elite school, while pocketing their tuition payments. Back in the 1980s, Giannulli convinced his dad that he was a college student by making bogus report cards and got his pop to fork over cash with fake tuition bills, according to a recently resurfaced 2016 profile on the fashion blog “The Hundreds.” “SC was expensive, so that was how I was starting my company. I used all that cash,” Giannulli told the blog. The article says Giannulli did attend some classes and he lived in a fraternity house at the school. USC confirmed to CNN that Giannulli attended during the spring semester of 1984, but not as a fully matriculated student. He went to the College of Continuing Education, a non-degree program open to anyone “with no formal admissions requirements.” Those students were given “visitor status” on campus. In a March 8 interview on “The Zach Sang Show,” Giannulli’s daughter Olivia Jade talked about her dad’s “crazy” college time. “I don’t know if I am supposed to say this, sorry dad. But [he] was like never enrolled in college, he faked his way through it. Yeah, so then he started his whole business with tuition money that his parents thought was going to college.” In that same interview, the beauty blogger said she planned to use her time in college to enhance her brand.
6am – A/B/C MUELLER REPORT HIGHLIGHTS/RECAP:
- Kellyanne Conway torches the Democrats and the media during a press conference about the Mueller report: “We’re accepting apologies today too, for anybody who feels the grace in offering them”
- Trump: I’m having a good day. It’s called no collusion. No Obstruction! This should never happen to another president again!
- Trump Said ‘I’m Fucked’ After Special Counsel’s Appointment: Mueller Report
- President Trump called the White House counsel, Donald McGahn, at home and ordered him to fire Robert Mueller. McGahn refused.
- AG Barr says White House “fully cooperated” with Mueller probe, despite, “as the special counsel’s report acknowledges…substantial evidence” showing Pres. Trump “was frustrated and angered by his sincere belief that the investigation was undermining his presidency.”
- AG William Barr says the White House “fully cooperated” with Mueller, but adds report “acknowledges” there was “substantial evidence” showing Trump “was frustrated and angered by his sincere belief that the investigation was undermining his presidency”
- Bill Barr: “Thanks to the special counsel’s investigation, we now know that Russian operatives who perpetrated these schemes did not have the cooperation of President Trump or the Trump campaign.”
- Attorney General William Barr: “We now know that the Russian operatives who perpetrated these schemes did not have the cooperation of President Trump or the Trump campaign — or the knowing assistance of any other American for that matter.”
- Bill Barr explains his determination on the issue of obstruction of justice by Trump. “The deputy attorney general and I concluded that the evidence developed by the special counsel is not sufficient to establish that the President committed an obstruction of justice offense.”
- VINCE: With DOJ weighing the frenzied media coverage of Trump over the last 2 years in their “obstruction” judgments, it’s now no wonder Barr did his presser first. Either he sets the tone, or the media who regularly misled our expectations get to. Easy choice.
- BRIT HUME: Perhaps the most damaging part of Mueller report is its account, based on Don McGahn’s testimony, that Trump directed McGahn in June 2017 to have Mueller fired. McGahn didn’t do it and was prepared to resign. Trump backed off, but later tried to get McGahn to deny firing order.
- MUELLER REPORT UNDERCUTS SEVERAL STEELE DOSSIER CLAIMS, THOUGH THE SALACIOUS DOCUMENT IS BARELY MENTIONED
- TRUMP CAMPAIGN STATEMENT: “Now the tables have turned, and it’s time to investigate the liars who instigated this sham investigation into President Trump…”
- MCCLATCHY TRIES TO CLEAN UP IT’S COHEN IN PRAGUE STORY! Cell signal puts Cohen outside Prague around time of purported Russian meeting
- “EDITOR’S NOTE: Robert Mueller’s report to the attorney general states that Mr. Cohen was not in Prague. It is silent on whether the investigation received evidence that Mr. Cohen’s phone pinged in or near Prague, as McClatchy reported.”
- MUELLER REPORT DIRECTLY CONTRADICTS BOMBSHELL BUZZFEED STORY
- BUZZFEED TRIES TO EXPLAIN: How We Characterized Michael Cohen’s Testimony
- BEN SMITH QUOTES FROM FBI NOTES LEAKED TO BUZZFEED: Our story was based on detailed information from senior law enforcement sources. That reporting included documents — specifically, pages of notes that were taken during an interview of Cohen by the FBI. In those notes, one law enforcement source wrote that “DJT personally asked Cohen to say negotiations ended in January and White House counsel office knew Cohen would give false testimony to Congress. Sanctioned by DJT. Joint lawyer team reviewed letter Cohen sent to SSCI about his testimony about Trump Tower moscow, et al, knowing it contained lies.” The law enforcement source also wrote: “Cohen told OSC” — the Office of Special Counsel — “he was asked to lie by DJT/DJT Jr., lawyers.”
- ANOTHER BUZZFEED CLEAN UP: A Russian who offered Michael Cohen a meeting between Trump and Putin was a former government official, not a weightlifter by the same name
- CHUCK ROSS: Helluva way for Buzzfeed to correct its story. They reported that Cohen’s contact was a weightlifter, even posted his photo. They had the wrong guy
6am – D INTERVIEW – FATHER FRANK PAVONE – National Director, Priests for Life and Missionaries of the Gospel of Life – reflected on the meaning of Holy Week, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter.
- For listeners, Father Frank is offering a free book “Prolife Reflections for Everyday” to anyone who emails him: [email protected].
- What is Good Friday & Why do Christians Celebrate It? Good Friday is the religious holiday when Catholics and Christians remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, before celebrating the resurrection on Easter Sunday. The holiday’s title may appear confusing. What is “good” about a beating, flogging, and execution? The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus suffered through this agony in order to pay the price for the sins of humanity. By dying on the cross, Jesus ensured the redemption of mankind. Good Friday is the observation of the day that Jesus Christ sacrificed himself as penance for all of humanity’s sins. The National Catholic Register adds that the word “good” was also used to mean “holy” during medieval times. According to the Bible, Catholics and other Christians believe that Jesus celebrated Passover in Jerusalem with his disciples on Holy Thursday, which included the Washing of the Feet. Later that night, after Jesus had prayed, he was betrayed by the apostle Judas. The Bible states that Judas approached Jesus and kissed him as a way to identify him to the soldiers that had come to arrest him. Early in the morning, when it was still dark, Jesus was taken before Pontius Pilate, who was the appointed Roman governor. According to the Gospel of Matthew, Pilate asked Jesus if he was the King of the Jews. Jesus answered, “You have said it.” Pilate finds no reason to condemn Jesus, so he sends Jesus to King Herod, who was in Jerusalem for the Passover feast. Pilate rationalized that since Jesus was from Galilee, which was Herod’s jurisdiction, then he should deal with Jesus. But as the gospel of Luke lays out, Jesus gives no answer to Herod’s questions, and he is sent back to Pilate. Pilate states repeatedly that he does not believe Jesus has committed a capital crime. The Gospels explain that the crowd chanted at Pilate, demanding that Jesus be crucified and an accused murderer named Barabbas be released. Pilate agreed and washed his hands to signify that he was not responsible for Jesus’ death. Jesus was whipped and mocked, and then made to carry the cross to the place where he would be crucified. A witness named Simon is pulled out of the crowd to carry the cross for Jesus, who fell three times on the way to Golgotha, which means “place of the skull” in Aramaic. The Roman soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross and cast dice to divide his clothing. The Gospels explain that they mocked Jesus by posting a sign above his head that identified him as “King of the Jews” and told Jesus to save himself if he was really the Messiah. The Gospel of Mark states that Jesus was crucified at 9 a.m. on the holiday we now know of as Good Friday.
6am – E/F CONGRESSIONAL DEMS REACT TO MUELLER REPORT:
- Ocasio-Cortez signs impeachment resolution against President Trump: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez @AOC: Mueller’s report is clear in pointing to Congress’ responsibility in investigating obstruction of justice by the President. It is our job as outlined in Article 1, Sec 2, Clause 5 of the US Constitution. As such, I’ll be signing onto @RashidaTlaib’s impeachment resolution.
- Richard Blumenthal: “What’s demonstrated in powerful and compelling detail” in the Mueller report is “nothing less than a national scandal.” “This report is far from the end of the inquiry … it is the beginning of another chapter.”
- ADAM SCHIFF RESPONDS: “The facts that are now established by this report are damning,” Adam Schiff says of Mueller report. “The standard cannot simply be that you can do anything you like so long as you can declare at the end of the day, ‘I am not a crook.”
- AG Barr “did a grave disservice to the country by misrepresenting significant parts of the Mueller report,” Adam Schiff says. “The attorney general is not the president’s personal lawyer…He is supposed to represent the interests of the American people.”
- Reporter: The president tweeted out ‘Game Over’. Is it game over? Schiff: It’s certainly not ‘game over’ in the sense that there’s a lot more that we need to know that’s redacted in [Mueller’s] report
- Rep. Adam Schiff keeps moving those goalposts: ‘Whether these acts are criminal or not…’
- NADLER RESPONDS: House Judiciary Cmte. Chairman Nadler: “The responsibility now falls to Congress to hold the president accountable for his actions.”
- Rep. Jerry Nadler: “I have formally requested that the Special Counsel Mueller testify before the House Judiciary Committee as soon as possible so we can get some answers to these critical questions — because we clearly can’t believe what Attorney General Barr tells us.”
- Rep. Jerry Nadler: “The special counsel made clear that he did not exonerate the president and the responsibility now falls to Congress to hold the president accountable for his actions.”
- Rep. Jerry Nadler: “Even in its incomplete form however, the #MuellerReport outlines disturbing evidence that President Trump engaged in obstruction of justice and other misconduct.”
- Nadler: “Barr’s words and actions suggest he has been disingenuous and misleading in saying the President is clear of wrongdoing”
- House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler: “We clearly can’t believe what Attorney General Barr tells us”
7am – A INTERVIEW – KEN CUCCINELLI – President of Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) & Former Virginia Attorney General – shared his analysis of the Mueller report and addressed the rumor about him being eyed for head of DHS.
7am – B/C NOTRE DAME UPDATE:
- Electrical short-circuit is believed to have started Notre Dame blaze, investigators believe. Scaffolding firm set up timelapse camera around 2pm on day of Notre Dame fire. Company said it took pictures every 10 minutes until fire started around 6.40pm. Investigators are inspecting images for evidence as to what started the blaze. Meanwhile, firefighters who helped save the cathedral arrived to meet Macron. (Daily Mail) – Investigators believe an ‘electrical short circuit’ was responsible for starting the blaze which devastated Notre Dame cathedral this week. A French judicial police official said investigators brought in to work out the cause of the inferno made the claims – despite them not having been given access to the church yet for safety reasons. The official, who spoke anonymously about the ongoing investigation, said the monument is still being consolidated with wooden planks to support some fragile parts of the walls. Only after it is fully made safe will investigators will be allowed a closer look in order to accurately determine the cause of the fire. The camera was installed around 2pm by French scaffolding company Europe Echafaudage and was set to take photographs every 10 minutes. The fire broke out around 6.40pm. Marc Eskenazi, a representative for Echafaudage, confirmed that smoke can be seen on some of the images and appears to start on the south side of the building.
- France asks: Should billionaires get tax breaks on Notre Dame donations? (CNN) — The donations should go a long way to restoring Notre Dame. But they’ve also sparked a debate about wealth, taxes and the particular brand of philanthropy. Tax controversy: Attention shifted quickly this week from the generosity of the pledges to whether the donors would claim generous tax benefits available in France. Under French law, individuals can deduct 66% of a charitable gift on their taxes, while businesses can claim back 60%. For every corporate gift of €100 million ($112 million), that’s €60 million ($68 million) the state doesn’t receive in tax, explained Anne-Claire Pache, a professor who specializes in philanthropy at France’s ESSEC Business School. Critics argue the donations meant to repair Notre Dame would be better spent on social programs to help the poor in a country where rising inequality has contributed to the outbreak of recent street protests. “While Arnault and Pinault run a publicity campaign playing the donation race, we forget that the greatest part of these donations will be the responsibility of all the French people through tax cuts,” Julia Cagé, an economics professor at Sciences Po, said on Twitter. The Pinault family, which controls luxury brands including Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, said Wednesday that it would not claim the tax deduction. Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior boss Arnault has suggested the same. “Pettiness and jealousy” are outweighing the common good, Arnault said Thursday at a meeting of LVMH (LVMHF) shareholders. In other countries, the company would be congratulated, he added.
- Relic rescued from Notre Dame to get key role at Good Friday procession. Events including a Good Friday ceremony and Easter Mass had been scheduled to take place at the cathedral before this week’s devastating fire. PARIS — Good Friday will be marked in the shadow of Notre Dame Cathedral with a procession carrying one of the treasures saved from this week’s devastating fire. Clergy and believers will gather along a bridge that connects the landmark to the rest of Paris on Friday for the stations of the cross, which recount Jesus’ road to his crucifixion.
- Black churches in Louisiana see $1.3 million surge in donations after fire at Notre Dame Cathedral. (Vox) — Before Tuesday, the Louisiana churches had received less than $100,000 in donations. A fundraising effort to support three historically black Louisiana churches burned down in recent arson attacks has seen a tremendous surge in support in the wake of a fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral, raising more than $1.3 million in donations since Tuesday morning. The wave of donations came one day after a massive fire damaged parts of the historic Paris church, sparking a flood of international support. On Tuesday, three of France’s richest families pledged to donate more than $500 million to efforts to rebuild the cathedral; the Trump administration has also promised to provide aid. With efforts to support the Notre Dame Cathedral drawing massive sums, activists, journalists, and politicians took to social media in the US to note that as the fundraising effort continued, people should also pay attention to the Louisiana churches, which were left reeling by arson and had been struggling to reach their donation goal. The message was further amplified by figures like former secretary of state and former first lady Hillary Clinton, journalist Yashar Ali, and retired NFL player Benjamin Watson. “It is imperative that we show this community and the entire country that these types of acts do not represent who we are,” Watson, who has been active in fundraising efforts for the past week, noted on Twitter.
7am – D INTERVIEW – RABBI EVAN MOFFIC – author of “What Every Christian Needs To Know about Passover” and “First the Jews: Combating the World’s Longest-Running Hate Campaign”
- BIO: Author of best-selling books, Evan is regularly featured as part of the Religion Panel on Fox and Friends, and his articles appear in Huffington Post. Evan speaks across the country to faith based groups and corporations. Rabbi Evan Moffic is a graduate of Stanford University and was the youngest rabbi of a Reform Congregation in a major American city. He serves as the Senior Rabbi of Congregation Solel in suburban Chicago. His wife, Arielle, is also a rabbi and they are the proud parents of two young children.
- TOPIC: Reflect on the meaning of Passover and the growing anti-semitism of the the freshman class of progressives in Congress
- WHAT IS PASSOVER AND HOW IS IT CELEBRATED? Passover is both the most-celebrated Jewish holiday of the year. Passover is a celebration of spring, of birth and rebirth, of a journey from slavery to freedom, and of taking responsibility for yourself, the community, and the world. However, strangely enough, none of this taking of responsibility gets done without groaning. It was with groaning that the Hebrews expressed the pain of their ancient enslavement in Egypt more than 3,300 years ago. The Torah states that Jews are to observe Passover for seven days, beginning on the 15th of the Jewish month Nisan (usually in April). The first night always includes a special seder (ritual dinner). Plus, traditional Jews outside of Israel don’t work on either the first two or the last two days of the seven-day period. Outside of Israel, Jews celebrate a second seder on the second night of Passover.
7am – E BIDEN RUNNING NEXT WEEK:
- THE ATLANTIC: Joe Biden Is Running for President. The former vice president has finally decided he’s in, and he’s announcing in less than a week. Now he just has to finish putting a campaign together. Joe Biden is running. The former vice president will make his candidacy official with a video announcement next Wednesday, according to people familiar with the discussions who have been told about them by top aides. Seriously, he’s actually made a decision. It’s taken two years of back-and-forth, it’ll be his third (or, depending on how you count, seventh) try for the White House, and many people thought he wouldn’t actually do it, but the biggest factor reshaping the 2020 Democratic-primary field is actually locking into place.
- EARLIER THIS WEEK: BIDEN LEAK: Former Vice President Joe Biden reportedly filmed a campaign ad ahead of his expected run for president. (April 16/Washington Examiner) — Former Vice President Joe Biden reportedly filmed a campaign ad ahead of his expected run for president. The Spanish-language video was secretly shot in South Florida on Saturday and emphasized healthcare, education, and Biden’s background, according to Politico. Paid actors in the film signed nondisclosure agreements, but some reportedly violated them by posting images of the shoot on social media. The leaks prompted an intermediary group between the actors and Biden to send out emails to the actors warning them against putting anything on social media. An email to the actors pinned the leaks on “some moms taking photo/video of their kids while they were being filmed.” “We are in a hot mess with campaign and client because someone leaked footage,” the email Monday says. “This is a VERY SERIOUS matter, as to why we had everyone sign an NDA agreement.” “If found photos or videos were posted after signing the NDA, legal action can occur,” the email warns.
8am – A MEDIA COVERAGE OF REPORT:
- CNN doubled down on their “Facts First” campaign yesterday by posting a tweet with another “Facts First” ad: this is an apple, this is an apple, together you have a case. (ends with on words on the screen “Facts First”)
- CLAPPER ON CNN with CHRIS CUOMO: I’ve always felt impeachment is too divisive so this will have to be resolved at the polling place…
- CUOMO gushes at CUOMO: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR GUIDANCE…
- CUOMO: there is tons of COLLUSION IN THIS REPORT!
- CNN’s CHRIS CUOMO: Mueller Found ‘a Ton of Collusion,’ Only ‘Sophisticated’ People See It: Sophisticated judgment is the operative phrase because I don’t know how, in good conscience, if you have a dose of shame in you — and you want to support the President, that is fine, stick to criminality. Stay away from the word collusion, because there is a ton of collusion. There is a ton of clever secretive behavior and Mueller lays it all out. The idea that there is nothing in here or that it was a witch hunt or this is a hoax, I don’t know how they make that case in good conscious anymore.
- ON CNN: MARY KATHARINE HAM on Democrat “collusion” claims: “I hope nobody missed leg day because carrying these goal posts are going to be very heavy… There was no collusion.”
- MSNBC COVERAGE: SEKULOW TAKES DOWN BRIAN WILLIAMS: TRUMP LAWYER READS DIRECTLY FROM MUELLER REPORT TO PUSH BACK AGAINST BRIAN WILLIAMS: President Donald Trump’s lawyer, Jay Sekulow, read directly from the Mueller report Thursday when MSNBC’s Brian Williams asked him how Attorney General William Barr came to the conclusion that there was no collusion.
- MSNBC’s Brian Williams Reacts To Barr presser: “Bill Barr has decided … he’s fine with his legacy being the AG who took one for the team.”
- MSNBC’s Brian Williams took his shot at Barr Thursday, calling him “Baghdad Bill Barr.”
- CHRIS MATTHEWS STARTS PUSHING IMPEACHMENT: MSNBC: HARDBALL’s: Chris Matthews: Impeachment proceedings are a way to get to truth. Regarding impeachment, Chris says “If you’re going after the truth, go all the way to the truth and the way to get the truth is an impeachment exercise. That’s how you get the truth.”
8am – B/C INTERVIEW – HOGAN GIDLEY – White House Deputy Assistant to the President & Principal Deputy Press Secretary — reacted the release of the Mueller report.
8am – D INTERVIEW – KEN STARR — author of “Contempt: A Memoir of the Clinton Investigation” and was the independent counsel who investigated the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals during the Clinton administration – analyzed the findings of the Mueller report.
8am – E More media reaction to the release of the Mueller report.
