WASHINGTON–One of the U.S. service members killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan this week has ties to Prince George’s County.

Christopher Slutman, a Staff Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps, spent 19 years with the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department in Hyattsville, Md.

Fire Chief Oleg Pelekhaty said in a statement on the department’s Facebook page that Slutman worked his way up from a wagon driver to a Captain.

“Through this trying time, we will remember Chris for the father, husband, brother, son, and friend that he was, the moral character he displayed daily, and the courage and conviction to serve his fellow Americans, both at home and abroad,” Pelekhaty said.

Slutman also was a 15 year member of the FDNY in the Bronx.

He leaves behind his wife, Shannon, and three daughters.
