According to Mike Litterst, a spokesperson for the National Mall, the warm temperatures that have recently impacted the area helped move the blossoms toward the fourth stage of the bloom process, also known as peduncle elongation.
“The next stage is when we’ll start to see the white blossoms emerge, but there is a very noticeable reddish tint if you look around the tidal basin now and that’s from those buds that are starting to emerge,” Litterst said.
There are still two more stages left until the blossoms reach peak bloom. While the warmer weather has impacted the trees, the cherry blossoms are still on time to reach peak bloom during the first week of April, according to Litterst.
