WASHINGTON (WMAL) – The office of Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot announced on Monday that it had stopped processing electronic tax returns from 24 tax preparers in the state and across others including, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia.
According to a release from the agency, the reasoning behind the suspension was due to a high volume of suspicious tax returns that they received from these firms.
This issue seems to be quite common as the agency flagged 74 tax preparers at 78 locations last year alone. According to a release from the agency, the Maryland Comptroller’s office has flagged 215 tax preparation firms at 228 locations for highly-suspicious tax returns since 2016.
“Our Questionable Returns Detection Team vigilantly monitors tax filings and is constantly keeping a watchful eye for unscrupulous preparers who submit false returns, causing financial harm to individual filers and their families and to the State of Maryland’s coffers,” Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot said in a release. “Blocking these swindlers and protecting hardworking Maryland taxpayers is the agency’s top priority each tax season.”
