Is Trump especially vulnerable to primary challenge? (Washington Examiner)

It’s become a common talking point for “Never Trump” Republicans seeking to defeat President Trump in the 2020 GOP primaries: Polls have found that a substantial number, maybe 40 percent, of Republican voters say they would be open to a primary challenge to the president. Those surveys, the “Never Trumpers” argue, show that Trump is particularly weak and vulnerable to a serious primary challenge.

The problem is that it is common for voters to say they are open to a primary challenge to the president of their own party. It happened to former President Barack Obama in 2010-2011, before Obama went on to win re-election. It also happened to Bill Clinton in 1994-1995, before Clinton went on to win re-election. It did not happen to George W. Bush in 2002-2003, but that was because of strong Republican support for a wartime president. [Read More]

Supreme Court to hear Bladensburg Peace Cross case on Wednesday (FOX 5 DC)

Steven C. Lowe says he has always thought that a 40-foot-tall, concrete cross that stands on a large, grassy highway median near his Maryland home was odd.

For years, he says, he didn’t know that the cross is a war memorial. A plaque on the cross’ base lists the names of 49 area residents who died in World War I, but it isn’t easily read from the road and getting to the monument requires dashing across traffic. Lowe said he felt the cross implied that the city favored Christians over others. [Read More]

Embattled Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax compared himself to Jim Crow-era lynching victims in a surprise speech Sunday, as he resists widespread calls to resign prompted by allegations of sexual assault.

Fairfax strongly defended himself and lashed out at his critics from his rostrum in the state Senate as the 2019 legislative session was coming to a close. [Read More]

Donald Trump attacks Spike Lee over ‘racist hit’ during Oscars acceptance speech (FOX News)

President Trump on Monday blasted Spike Lee after the legendary director took a shot at him during his Oscars acceptance speech.

“Be nice if Spike Lee could read his notes, or better yet not have to use notes at all, when doing his racist hit on your President, who has done more for African Americans (Criminal Justice Reform, Lowest Unemployment numbers in History, Tax Cuts, etc.) than almost any other Pres!” Trump tweeted. Ed Gillespie Gives A Master Class On How Republicans Should Discuss Racism (The Federalist)

It is no secret that Republicans often flounder when confronted with racial issues. It’s not easy to be presented in the mainstream press as the “racist party.” But at a Heritage Foundation event this week, Ed Gillespie, the former GOP candidate for governor in Virginia, not only tackled the question, he knocked the answer out of the park, and created a template for all conservatives.

As we all know now, the Democrat who defeated Gillespie while painting Republicans as racists found himself mired in a blackface scandal. Ralph Northam will survive whatever role in racist 1980s Southern campus behavior he engaged in. That ought to tick off Gillespie, but when asked about it, he took no shots at Northam. Instead, he elucidated a nuanced approach to his state’s relationship to race that was absolutely admirable. [Read More]
