Longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone indicted by Mueller and arrested in FBI dawn raid on his Florida home (Washington Examiner)

Republican operative Roger Stone, a longtime associate of President Trump, early Friday was arrested by a dozen armed FBI agents and indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller on seven counts, including making false statements to Congress, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice.

Stone, 66, was arrested in a dawn raid at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and the special counsel’s office said he will make an appearance later today at the federal courthouse in the area. A Washington grand jury approved the indictment Thursday. [Read More]

National air traffic controller union leader: ‘Stressed’ workers ‘making mistakes’ amid shutdown (The Hill)

The leader of the national air traffic controllers’ union is warning that the partial government shutdown could force “stressed out” air traffic controllers to make mistakes putting passenger safety at risk.

“I’m getting notes from people who are saying they’re making mistakes that they hadn’t made in the 10, 15, 20 years of service that they’ve been an air traffic controller. They’re making them because they’re stressed out, because they don’t know when this is going to end and they’re distracted,” Trish Gilbert, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, said Thursday on PBS NewsHour. Venezuela military rejects U.S.-led assault on Nicolas Maduro, threatens embassy personnel (The Washington Times)

Venezuela’s military leaders came down squarely Thursday on the side of embattled President Nicolas Maduro, giving a boost to the socialist leader in the fight to save his job and setting the stage for a long, potentially violent standoff that carries deep geopolitical implications from Caracas to Washington.

Trump administration officials and countries around the hemisphere stood firmly behind their decision to renounce Mr. Maduro and instead recognize opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s rightful president, but the country’s military — which wields extraordinary power and traditionally has had a critical say in political disputes — rejected the U.S.-led diplomatic assault on the Maduro regime and issued thinly veiled threats against U.S. Embassy personnel in Caracas.

They also cast Mr. Guaido’s claim to be Venezuela’s true president as little more than an attempted coup and found diplomatic allies in RussiaTurkeyChina and Iran, all of which publicly backed the Maduro government while warning the U.S. not to intervene. [Read More]

Lindsey Graham Needs To Pursue Those Who Lied During The Kavanaugh Debacle (The Federalist)

Since taking over three weeks ago as chairman for the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Lindsey Graham has already staked out several key priorities for the committee. The list will please conservatives: confirm more judges and investigate the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI for their handling of the Russia collusion investigation, the Hillary Clinton email investigation, and the use of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to obtain a warrant to surveil former Trump campaign aid Carter Page.

Yet Graham has so far omitted an equally significant area of inquiry for the Senate Judiciary Committee: the possible criminal conduct undertaken to thwart the confirmation of now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. [Read More]

Coming to Jesus, armed: Virginia Senate OKs guns in churches (The Pilot Online)

Virginians could legally bring their guns to church under a bill that cleared the state Senate this week and sparked an emotional debate over whether packing heat in a house of worship constitutes a snub to the Almighty.

“Psalm 46 said, ‘God is our refuge and strength,'” Sen. Lionell Spruill Sr., D, said as he argued against the measure Thursday. “Now we are saying with this bill, we no longer trust in God.”

The bill repeals a law thought to date to Colonial times which makes it a misdemeanor to “carry any gun, pistol, bowie knife, dagger or other dangerous weapon without good and sufficient reason, to a place of worship” during religious services. [Read More]
