WASHINGTON (WMAL) – If you haven’t driven much over the long weekend, you might want to start your car before heading back to work Tuesday morning, AAA spokesperson John Townsend advised.

With temperatures as low as 17 degrees in the Washington D.C. area on Martin Luther King day, according to National Weather Service, AAA received a 41 percent higher than usual call volume for a typical Monday.

The number one issue reported to AAA? Dead batteries, according to Townsend.

Looking ahead to Tuesday when many employees go back to work, Townsend had only one piece advice for the public: “If you plan to go to work tomorrow in your car, go out and start it today and let the battery run. That way it won’t drain as much power overnight.”

He also encourages people to stop charging their cell phones or turning on the heater before starting the car, which are one of the major drivers behind killing car batteries.
