Charles Co. school seniors with third of year missed, unexcused allowed to graduate, records show (FOX 5 DC)

Charles County Public Schools is graduating seniors who have missed a third of the school year in unexcused absences, according to attendance records.

In an open records request, FOX5 has found 114 seniors missed 20 or more days unexcused. The numbers also include students who missed 60 days, or a third of the school year. However, the graduation rate for the class of 2018 was nearly 95%, a record high for the district. Only 28 seniors didn’t graduate, according to data provided by the school system.

A high school educator who spoke to FOX 5 on the condition of anonymity, said teachers are under pressure to pass students even if they’re not showing up.

“It doesn’t matter if you come or not, you’re going to pass,” she said. “Teachers have to have so many kids pass or else it reflects bad on them.” [Read More]

Flake backs Kavanaugh, boosting his chances of confirmation (Washington Examiner)

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said Friday morning he will vote to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, a decision that greatly increases the chances the Senate will be able to confirm him in the coming days.

Flake’s support also means the Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to support Kavanaugh’s nomination when it votes at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Flake sits on that committee, so his opposition would have made it impossible for the committee to support Kavanaugh, as it is made up of 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

Flake was one of the handful of Republican senators who could have tipped the 51-49 Senate against Kavanaugh, along with Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. His decision to support Kavanaugh now means only Collins or Murkowski is need to confirm the nominee. [Read More]

Democratic senators flee committee to protest Kavanaugh vote (The Washington Times)

Some Democratic senators stormed out of the Judiciary Committee Friday morning after losing their latest bid to derail Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, protesting what they called a “ram job” ahead of a vote later in the day.

Republicans appear to have the votes to push Judge Kavanaugh through the committee on a party-line vote, and they are moving to speed him to the Senate floor, saying Thursday’s testimony by Christine Blasey Fordalleging a sexual assault 36 years ago was compelling, but ultimately unsubstantiated.

Democrats had demanded that before any committee action senators should hear from a man Ms. Blasey Fordsays was in the room for the assault. They tried to force the panel to subpoena that man, Mark Judge.

The committee rejected that on an 11-10 vote, then voted to set a time-certain later in the day for a final vote on the nomination.

At that point a number of the more junior Democratic senators conducted a walk out. [Read More]
