Mornings on the Mall
Tuesday, September 11, 2018
Hosts: Mary Walter and Vince Coglianese
Executive Producer: Heather Hunter
5am – A/B/C FACIAL RECOGNITION FOR INTERNATIONAL FLYERS DEBUTS AT DULLES: The new veriScan system developed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority—with guidance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection—scans the faces of travelers approaching the gate. The system then compares the photo to a gallery that includes images of that person—either their passport photo for U.S. citizens or the photo taken of foreign nationals when they entered the country. The process eliminates the need for an airline employee to manually check every boarding pass and passport while boarding a plane.
5am – D FBI’S MEDIA LEAKING:
- Newly-surfaced text messages between former FBI officials (and lovebirds) Peter Strzok and Lisa Page have raised concerns about a government ‘culture of media leaking’ designed to harm President Trump, a Republican congressman says
- ‘MEDIA LEAKING STRATEGY’: New documents provided to Congress raise “grave concerns” about an “apparent systemic culture of media leaking” among high-level FBI and Justice Department officials to release information damaging to President Trump, a top Republican congressman charged in a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Monday … In the letter, Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., points in particular to two text message exchanges in April 2017 between now-fired FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI attorney Lisa Page, in which the two discuss the bureau’s “media leak strategy.” “I had literally just gone to find this phone to tell you I want to talk to you about media leak strategy with DOJ before you go,” Strzok texted Page on April 10, 2017, according to Meadows, who cited newly produced documents from the Justice Department. Two days later, Strzok wrote, “Well done, Page,” and told her that two negative articles about Page’s “namesake” would soon come out. That was an apparent reference to Carter Page, the former Trump adviser whom the FBI surveilled for months after obtaining a warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court.
5am – E MOONVES UPDATE:
- Les Moonves to remain CBS advisor — with $120 million payout pending investigation
- Julie Chen, wife of departed CBS CEO, takes time off from ‘The Talk’
6am – A WOODWARD BOOK:
- Woodward: Mattis, Kelly denials of his book quotes untrue
- Woodward: Trump ‘detached’ from reality, jeopardizes national security. The veteran journalist spoke about “Fear,” his new book on the president, in an appearance on the “Today” show. Veteran journalist Bob Woodward said Monday in an exclusive interview on NBC News’ “Today” that President Donald Trump is “detached” from reality and jeopardizes American national security. “I’ve never seen an instance when the president is so detached from the reality of what’s going on,” Woodward said. Trump responded within an hour, calling the author a “liar” and a political “operative” for Democrats. In his first live TV interview for the book’s release, the Washington Post editor and author of “Fear: Trump in the White House” recounted an incident in which the president complained about U.S. troops in the Korean peninsula. Woodward said the president’s staff tried to explain that this is a defensive measure. “James Mattis says we’re doing this to prevent World War III,” Woodward added. “The idea that the secretary of defense has to tell a president that all of these actions are designed to prevent the ultimate catastrophe. And Mattis goes on and says if we don’t keep these programs, which are very sensitive, the only deterrent program we have will be the nuclear option.” Woodward depicts widespread White House dysfunction in “Fear,” raising explosive allegations of a paranoid president whose own staff believes is unhinged and erratic. The book’s findings were amplified when The New York Times published an anonymous op-ed from a senior administration official, claiming the president’s staff seeks to thwart his “more misguided impulses.” The book will be released on Tuesday.
6am – B/C KEN STARR CONSIDERED PERJURY CHARGES AGAINST HILLARY: Former independent counsel Ken Starr writes in his new memoir that he considered — but ultimately abandoned — the idea of perjury charges against then-first lady Hillary Clinton after her “preposterous” deposition with investigators in 1995. “I was upset over Mrs. Clinton’s performance, and was even considering bringing the matter before the Washington grand jury for possible indictment on perjury,” Starr writes in “Contempt: A Memoir of the Clinton Investigation,” which hits bookshelves Tuesday.
6am – D MAXINE WATERS DOUBLES DOWN ON HARASSING TRUMP OFFICIALS IN PUBLIC (Daily Caller) – California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters doubled down on her calls to harass Trump officials during a Young Democrats event on Saturday. While accepting an award from the Stonewall Young Democrats in Los Angeles, Waters said she still believes officials should not be “welcome” in public spaces. “There are those who said that we lacked civility when I got up and talked about the president’s cabinet, and I said if you see ’em anywhere, if you see ’em at a restaurant, if you see ’em in a department store, even at a gasoline station, just tell ’em, ‘You’re not welcome here or anywhere,’” Waters declared. “And so, it frightened a lot of people, and of course the lying president said that I had threatened all of his constituents,” Waters said. “I did not threaten his constituents, his supporters.” “I do that all the time, but I didn’t do it that time,” she said as the crowd laughed in delight. “They tried to frame that as violence.”
6am – E 9/11 ANNIVERSARY: US marks 9/11 with somber tributes, new monument to victims. NEW YORK – Americans are commemorating 9/11 with somber tributes, volunteer projects and a new monument to victims, after a year when two attacks demonstrated the enduring threat of terrorism in the nation’s biggest city. Thousands of 9/11 victims’ relatives, survivors, rescuers and others are expected at Tuesday’s anniversary ceremony at the World Trade Center, while President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence will head to the two other places where hijacked planes crashed on Sept. 11, 2001, in the deadliest terror attack on American soil. The president and first lady Melania Trump plan to join an observance at the Sept. 11 memorial in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where a new “Tower of Voices” was dedicated Saturday. Pence is attending a ceremony at the Pentagon. Trump, a Republican and native New Yorker, took the occasion of last year’s anniversary to issue a stern warning to extremists that “America cannot be intimidated.” Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks on 9/11, when international terrorism hit home in a way it previously hadn’t for many Americans. Sept. 11 still shapes American policy, politics and everyday experiences in places from airports to office buildings, even if it’s less of a constant presence in the public consciousness after 17 years.

- FLEEING FLORENCE: President Donald Trump late Monday approved an emergency declaration for North Carolina as ‘life-threatening’ Hurricane Florence barrels toward the Carolinas and is expected to strengthen to a Category 5 storm … The president’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA to coordinate disaster relief efforts for “the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population,” a White House statement said, according to South Carolina’s The State. State and local officials in the Carolinas and Virginia have ordered around 1.5 million people to evacuate, The Washington Post reported.
7am – D Pelosi: Dems Need ‘New Blood,’ but ‘I’m Here’ as Long as Trump in WH. (Breitbart) — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) revealed that though even she agrees that Democrats need “new blood,” she is not going anywhere so long as Donald Trump is president. In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that will air Monday evening on CNN International and PBS, Pelosi said she agrees that “it’s time for new blood and we should move on” and added, “If Hillary Clinton had won, and the Affordable Care Act was protected— I feel very proprietary about that—I was happy to go my way,” “But to have no woman at the table and to have the Affordable Care Act at risk, I said, ‘As long as he’s here, I’m here,” Pelosi said, referring to Trump, whom she called “45.” Pelosi said her caucus gives her the “honor of serving, and it’s up to them to choose who comes next,” but added that she was very confident she will regain her Speakership if Democrats take back the House after the 2018 midterm elections.

The hurricane had sustained winds of 140 mph and remained a Category 4 storm Monday. Scientists warn, however, that the unusually warm water could accelerate the storm’s winds to 155 mph — nearly Category 5 intensity, the Post reported. 8am – B/C Newly Revealed Email Shows Google’s Bias Against Trump In 2016 Election, Report Says (Daily Wire) — Fox News host Tucker Carlson revealed in an exclusive segment Monday that a newly obtained email from inside Google allegedly shows the tech giant’s pro-Hillary bias during the 2016 election. “An email obtained exclusively by this show reveals that a senior Google employee deployed the company’s resources to increase voter turnout in ways she believed would help the Clinton campaign win in the last election,” Carlson said. The November 9, 2016 email obtained by Fox News reportedly came from Eliana Murillo, the former Head of Multicultural Marketing at Google. “In her email, Murillo touts Google’s multifaceted efforts to boost Hispanic in the election,” Carlson said. “She knows that Latinos voted in record-breaking numbers, especially in states like Florida, Nevada, and Arizona.” Carlson reported that Murillo said that Arizona was a “key state for us,” and bragged that the company “used its power to ensure that millions of people saw certain hashtags and social media impressions with the goal of influencing their behavior during the election.” “[Google] supported partners like Voto Latino to pay for rides to the polls in key states,” the email allegedly states, describing the assistance as a “silent donation.” “Murillo then says that Google helped Voto Latino create ad campaigns to promote those rides,” Carlson said. “At the end of her email, Murillo makes it clear that Google was working to get Hillary Clinton elected.” “Ultimately, after all was said and done, the Latino community did come out to vote, and completely surprised us,” the email alleged states. “We never anticipated 29% of Latinos would vote for Trump. No one did.”
