Mornings on the Mall
Monday, September 3, 2018
Host: Dan Mandis
5am – A Meghan McCain, Obama knock Trump at John McCain’s funeral service: ‘America was always great’ (Fox News) Meghan McCain and President Barack Obama took apparent swipes at President Trump on Saturday in a eulogy for John McCain — who sparred with Trump on a number of occasions before his death last week of brain cancer. “The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great,’ McCain’s daughter said, in what appeared to be a reference to Trump’s presidential campaign slogan: “Make America Great Again.” The remarks were made during a funeral service at Washington National Cathedral for the Arizona Republican, who died last week of brain cancer. Obama’s jabs were more subtle but still appeared to be directed at the current occupant of the White House. He derided those in politics who traffic in “bombast and insult and phony controversies and manufactured outrage.”
5am – B Top California Dem called for boycott of In-N-Out Burger over GOP donations. It backfires big time. (The Blaze) A call from California Democrats to boycott In-N-Out Burger appears to have backfired. After it was revealed last week that In-N-Out — a fast-food eatery with strong Christian beliefs that even places Bible verses on its wrappers, bags, and cups — donated $25,000 to the California Republican Party, Eric Bauman, head of the California Democratic Party, called on Democrats to boycott the famed fast-food chain. What’s ironic is that In-N-Out has donated money to California Democrats and Democratic PACs, in some cases much more than its noteworthy donation to the state’s GOP. The company said in a statement that it supports politicians regardless of political affiliation. What the company cares about is policies beneficial for Californians.

But many on social media were uninspired by the bishop’s response to accusations that he inappropriately touched the pop princess on live television.
6am –F Pittsburgh becomes largest US city without a daily print newspaper (The Hill) Pittsburgh will hold the distinction of being the largest city in the U.S. without a daily print newspaper after the city’s Post-Gazette informed readers it will cut its production schedule from seven days a week to five beginning this weekend. 7am – E Bridezilla asks guests for $60,000, calls off wedding when they refuse (CBS) Most little girls dream about their weddings being perfect, but one bride took that idealization too far. The unnamed bride posted on her Facebook page a long rant about why she was calling off her wedding, and a Twitter user screenshot the entire post from a “wedding shaming” group. “It comes with great sadness that I am announcing the cancelation of the [unnamed] Wedding. I apologize for canceling only four days beforehand. Unfortunately, [unnamed] and I have broken up due to some recent and irreparable problems,” the tirade starts out civil enough. “However, we are remaining civil and are still a team for our son.” The bride goes on to say she’s deleting her Facebook and will spend the next two months in South America, “exploring my soul and ridding myself of toxic energy brought on by my friends and family.” The couple saved up about $15,000 for the wedding and they started touring venues for an “extravagant blow out wedding.” They then went to see a local psychic who told them to pick the most expensive venue they looked at and, as the bride says, “why the h*ll not?” Bride X says the dream wedding in her head totaled to about $60,000. She says they just needed “a little” help from friends and family to make it all happen.
