What to Make of the Cohen Plea and Manafort Convictions (National Review)

Who would have thought that the conviction of his former campaign manager would be the good news for President Trump yesterday?

Cohen Plea
From a political standpoint, the guilty plea of the president’s lawyer Michael Cohen is the more damaging news. Cohen pled guilty to eight felonies. While the five counts of failure to pay taxes on over $4 million in income are the most consequential to him, most significant to the country are two counts of illegal “in kind” campaign contributions. These, of course, involve $280,000 in hush-money payments made prior to the 2016 election to two women who claim to have had sexual liaisons with Donald Trump, many years before. In entering his guilty plea in Manhattan federal court (the Southern District of New York), Cohen acknowledged that he was directed to make the payments by Donald Trump — referred to as “the candidate.” [Read More]

A new poll shows that Maryland educators are struggling financially, after spending their own money on school supplies and running up their personal debt.

Some teachers even have second jobs to make ends meet.

NFL Legend Jim Brown Backs Trump In 2020, Says Support Will ‘Make Me Very Unpopular In The Black Community’ (Daily Wire)

Nobody messes with Jim Brown.

Comedian Richard Pryor, who famously caught on fire while freebasing cocaine, once joked that the same fate would not have befallen Brown. “Fire don’t mean s*** to Jim. Fire jumped on Jim once. He said, ‘Hey!’ ” Pryor joked, brushing the fire off him.

Brown, 6-foot-2 and 230 lbs., dominated football as a running back for the Cleveland Browns back in the 1960s. And even at 82 years old, Brown is still a formidable force. [Read More]

There Is Nothing ‘Illegitimate’ About The Brett Kavanaugh Nomination (The Federalist)

Perhaps one day a court will find that Donald Trump had conspired with his personal lawyer Michael Cohen to pay non-disclosure agreements meant to silence his mistresses. Perhaps one day the House will impeach Trump for breaking those campaign finance laws, and then, maybe the Senate will also remove him from office.

Those are the mechanisms that have been provided by the Constitution to thwart a president from nominating justices to the Supreme Court. I’m afraid there’s no clause in the document that empowers angst-y liberal pundits and politicians to question the legitimacy of duly confirmed justices. [Read More]
