David Kris is a founder of Culper Partners, a security and technology consulting firm, and was the assistant attorney general for national security from 2009-2011.
President Trump’s decision Wednesday to revoke former CIA director John Brennan’s security clearance is bad for the country in three ways.
First, this is clearly retaliation for public criticism of the president, and it appears designed to intimidate others who might consider doing the same. Brennan has been a fierce Trump detractor, and now he is being punished. Brennan himself will not be deterred, of course, but the president seems intent on sending a message to millions of current and former government officials that their clearances now depend on good behavior as defined by Trump’s personal preferences. Obama should fire John Brennan (The Washington Post)
In March, at the Council on Foreign Relations, CIA Director John Brennan was asked by NBC’s Andrea Mitchell whether the CIA had illegally accessed Senate Intelligence Committee staff computers “to thwart an investigation by the committee into” the agency’s past interrogation techniques. The accusation had been made earlier that day by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who said the CIA had “violated the separation-of-powers principles embodied in the United States Constitution.” Brennan answered: [Read More]
Brennan mulls legal action after security clearance revoked (NBC News)
Former CIA director John Brennan said Sunday that he is strongly considering legal action after his security clearance was revoked by President Donald Trump last week.
Appearing on “Meet the Press,” Brennan blasted the move as an example of Trump’s “egregious abuse of power and authority.” And he said that he’s considering legal options to possibly get an injunction to stop Trump from pulling clearances from critics in the future. [Read More]
Maria del Carmen Venegas was on her way to deliver a baby boy, her fifth child, by Caesarean section in a planned operation Wednesday afternoon. Her husband, Joel Arrona-Lara, was driving her car to the hospital.
Two SUVs swooped in to block the vehicle at a San Bernardino, Calif., gas station. They belonged to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the agents asked for Venegas’s identification, she later told CBS Los Angeles. She complied. The agents also asked for Arrona-Lara’s identification.
The couple was in a hurry when they left, and his ID was at home, Venegas told Univision affiliate KMEX. The agents searched the car and led Arrona-Lara away in handcuffs, leaving his wife frantic. [Read More]

Al Sharpton Messes up Spelling of Legendary Aretha Franklin Song: ‘R-E-S-P-I-C-T’ (Free Beacon)
MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation” host Rev. Al Sharpton called on President Donald Trump to be respectful in his rhetoric toward women but inadvertently misquoted legendary singer Aretha Franklin’s most famous lyric.
Sharpton was addressing Trump’s insults toward Omarosa Manigault Newman, the former White House aide and “Apprentice” contestant who wrote a new tell-all book criticizing him. Trump called Newman a “dog,” a favorite insult of his that Sharpton called an “animalistic slur.”
“I think you might’ve learned the lesson this week, sometimes the dog bites back with a book deal,” Sharpton said. [Read More]
