UPPER MARLBORO — (WMAL) — Dr. Kevin Maxwell let a nice size bag of cash hit him in the posterior on his way out the door.
The Prince George’s County Schools CEO, who announced he in May he would be leaving amidst a series of poor performance reports, finally reached a severance agreement worth more than $800,000. Maxwell had three years remaining on his contract, and would have been due more than a million dollars if he had stayed in his job.
The County Board of Education agreed to the severance package on a 7 – 2 vote, with two abstentions, during an executive session Thursday. The county will pay Maxwell $790,000, plus his regular salary for the next 45 days. His official last day of work was Thursday.
Maxwell, who grew up as a Prince George’s County student, ran the school system for five years, and departs following a numver of scandals, including accusations the school system manipulated grades to boost graduation goals and the discovery of unauthorized pay raises to some staff members.
