WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Record numbers of people are traveling for the 4th of July this year according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. More than 1 million Washingtonians are expected to travel 50 miles or more away from home – a 5.5 percent increase over last year.

Since the holiday falls on a Wednesday, lots of people are taking off the rest of the week in order to make a full week of it.

The worst time to drive will be Tuesday between 4 and 6 p.m. according to AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson John Townsend.

“We expect absolutely gridlock,” said Townsend.

During that time period, some Washingtonians will be driving home from work, while others will be getting out of town and tourists arriving all at the same time.

While driving could be insanity inducing, traveling via other modes of transit won’t be too pleasant either. About 87,000 Washingtonians are expected to fly, and 65,000 will be taking a bus, train or cruise ship.
