VA Congressman’s Cautiously Optimistic House Will Pass Immigration Bill This Week

WASHINGTON (WMAL) – The house is scheduled to vote on a compromise immigration bill this week. Action on the bill was postponed last week to give Republicans enough time to get the 218 votes needed to pass it.

“Getting to 218 is not easy, but we’re within range right now,” Rep. Dave Brat (VA-7) told WMAL.

But Brat says the compromise bill will not pass. He thinks the house will amend and pass Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s (VA-6) more conservative immigration bill which failed last week with a 193-231 vote.

Brat said there are many problems with the compromise bill: it doesn’t end chain migration or contain an E-Verify mandate, which Speaker Paul Ryan said last week could be added to it.

E-Verify is a system that allows employers to check the legal status of job applicants.

“That’s the major thing that has to be in here or we’ll end up right back where we are right now in a few years because people will come over the border,” Brat said.

The Goodlatte bill also provides a solution for DACA recipients, according to Brat, which was created in response to requests from Democrats.
