WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Thursday Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan defended his decision to pull the Maryland National Guard from the border. Hogan said Tuesday the state would not deploy any National Guard resources to the border until the policy of separating children from their families was rescinded.
Since Hogan made the decision, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to keep illegal immigrant kids with their parents.
“We said we’d pull out until we could resolve the situation,” Hogan told reporters Thursday. “I’m not sure it’s totally resolved, but at least we’re heading in the right direction, and I’m encouraged.”
Still, Hogan said a lot more has to be done to come up with a solution to the problem of illegal immigration.
When asked how many illegal immigrants are being detained in Maryland, Hogan said he has no idea because the federal government doesn’t share that information with state officials.
Whether Maryland will send the National Guard back to the border, Hogan said it will depend on the mission and what kind of resources are being requested.
Maryland had one helicopter, two pilots and two mechanics at the border.
