Tomorrow is the scheduled release of the Department of Justice inspector general’s report on the Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ’s handling of the Hillary Clinton investigation in the run-up to the 2016 election.
Last week, Inspector General (IG) Michael Horowitz announced in a letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley that the DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General had nearly completed its “ordinary processes for the review and classifications of such reports” and was expected to provide the public the final report on June 14, 2018. Horowitz also committed to appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 18, 2018, to answer questions about the report. [Read More]
Here’s What We Can Glean From What George Papadopoulos’s Wife Is Telling Media (The Federalist)
The Russia collusion narrative continues to unravel, while evidence supporting President Donald Trump’s “Spygate” charge continues to mount. It is impossible to know what future revelations await, but last week provided some important clues when Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos returned to the media circuit to defend her husband, the former Trump foreign policy advisor, George Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty last year to charges of lying to the FBI.
Mangiante’s statements last week and over the last year prove enlightening — and reliable — for two reasons: First, from pillow talk, she has knowledge of the events purportedly leading to the launching of Crossfire Hurricane, as well as evidence of attempts by spies, such as Stefan Halper, to target Papadopoulos. Mangiante is unlikely to lie about these events, because doing so would jeopardize her husband’s case: Should Mangiante contradict the information Papadopoulos provided to the Special Counsel’s office, he could face additional criminal charges. Second, while Mangiante has not been charged with a crime, should she reveal information that contradicts her sworn testimony before the grand jury, she could face criminal liability as well. Trump promises new era of peace after ‘complete denuclearization’ pledge (The Washington Times)
President Trump declared Tuesday that the U.S. and North Korea are ready for a new era of peace after securing a written pledge from dictator Kim Jong-un for “complete denuclearization” of the divided Korean Peninsula, saying the undisclosed fine print for dismantling Pyongyang’s weapons programs will ease concerns that Mr. Kim came away from their historic summit with the better end of the deal.
The publicly released text raised concerns that Mr. Trump had received only vague promises from Mr. Kim on his nuclear and missile programs, concerns that grew when Mr. Trump told reporters in Singapore after Mr. Kim left that he was freezing joint U.S.-South Korea military drills on the peninsula, a long-sought goal of North Korea. Mr. Trump called the “war games” an expensive provocation toward Pyongyang.
Emerging from nearly five hours of talks in the first meeting between a U.S. president and North Korea’s leader, Mr. Trump insisted that his four-point agreement with Mr. Kim was a great moment for the world. [Read More]
