WASHINGTON (WMAL) – A river flood warning’s in effect for parts of the Potomac River, and minor flooding started Friday morning as water from Tuesday’s heavy rains in Frederick made its way downstream according to National Weather Service hydrologist Jason Elliott.
Elliott said minor flooding will continue in the Potomac during high tide Friday and over the weekend.
Depending on how high the water level gets, Elliot said moderate flooding could happen on Wisconsin Avenue and the Washington Harbour waterfront.
The other side of the Potomac in Alexandria will likely be spared the word of it according to Elliott.
“We do still think there will be minor flooding in the Alexandria area and far southeast D.C. over the weekend, but it won’t be as much as what will happen further up toward the Southwest Waterfront,” Elliott said.
He explained the Potomac is wider downstream and can spread out more.
