ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The city of Alexandria is moving forward in efforts to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway.

For years, the Alexandria City Council has discussed stripping the name of the president of the Confederacy from U.S. Route 1, and the Council finally voted Tuesday to put the proposed ordinance on its June 23 agenda for a public hearing and subsequent final vote.

The Washington Post reports the name Richmond Highway was recommended because that is what the road is called in Fairfax County.

If the name change passes, it would cost the city $27,000.

The city is aiming to change the name by Jan. 1.
