Jim Mattis: ‘I don’t rule out anything’ in US response to Syria (Washington Examiner)

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Monday morning that a U.S. response was possible to the Syrian regime’s reported chemical weapons attack over the weekend.

“I don’t rule out anything right now,” Mattis told reporters during a meeting with a Qatari official at the Pentagon.

The secretary also pointed to Russia’s responsibility in the attack by Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government Saturday evening that killed dozens, including women and children, in a rebel-held suburb of Damascus. It comes a year after the U.S. struck Syria with cruise missiles for a similar chemical weapons attack on rebels and civilians. [Read More]

Crime, guns are among unresolved issues on final day of Maryland’s legislative session (Baltimore Sun)

Guns and crime will top the list of unfinished business Monday as state lawmakers gather in Annapolis for the final day of the 2018 legislative session.

Legislators introduced a record 3,101 bills introduced in the Maryland General Assembly this year. Now Democrats and Republicans will be rushing to salvage parts of what was once sweeping crime-reduction legislation endorsed by Gov. Larry Hogan and lawmakers to help reduce violence in Baltimore. They’ll also be trying to negotiate compromises on difficult gun issues, including allowing courts to take weapons from owners believed to be an imminent threat and adopting rules for taking weapons from domestic abusers.

The lawmakers, whose decisions could influence the campaign challenges they’ll face in this year’s elections, will likely work right up to 11:59 p.m. to approve hundreds of bills to send to Hogan. [Read More]
