Trumps slams Mexico and Dems as caravan of immigrants heads to US southern border (Fox News)
President Trump let loose on Mexico and congressional Democrats in a series of early morning tweets Monday as a caravan of Central American immigrants makes its way largely unfettered through Mexico on its way to the United States’ southern border.
“Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large ‘Caravans’ of people enter their country,” Trump tweeted. “They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws…..” [Read More]
Advocates’ advice for immigrants: If ICE knocks, don’t open the door (San Francisco Chronicle)
Lorena Melgarejo was awakened by her cell phone at 5 a.m. one day last fall. The caller was asking for help: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were at his front door, and he didn’t know what to do.
“You have the right to not open the door,” said Melgarejo, head of community group Faith in Action Bay Area, who got the call as part of her work for a hotline monitoring ICE activity in San Mateo County.
The man didn’t open the door, and the officers walked away — nothing came of it.“Don’t open the door” is a message advocates are spreading across Northern California through Know Your Rights training sessions, in which they explain to immigrants that they have constitutional protections — one of which is that ICE officers need a search warrant signed by a judge to enter a home without a resident’s permission. Byron York: So why was Trump aide talking to a Russian spy? (Washington Examiner)
The CNN team wanted viewers to know there could be a very big development in the Trump Russia investigation.
“CNN has learned why special counsel Robert Mueller wants the cooperation of former Trump campaign deputy Rick Gates,” anchor Alisyn Camerota said Friday. “Court documents indicate that Gates could be critical to nabbing even bigger fish in a collusion case involving the Kremlin.”
Reporter Shimon Prokupecz said the Mueller team “has been primarily using Rick Gates for information about what they call the central mission of the investigation, which has been Russian interference and collusion in the 2016 campaign.” Gates pleaded guilty in February to charges unrelated to collusion and is now cooperating with Mueller. What’s causing Baltimore’s population loss? It’s no mystery (Baltimore Sun)
With the U.S. Census Bureau reporting yet another year of population loss for the city, it doesn’t take an investigator to determine the causes.
The city’s scary record of 343 homicides in 2017 affirms the city’s well-known reputation as a dangerous place to live. Even if 2018 has fewer homicides, it doesn’t take a fortune teller to predict that this year’s homicide rate will be high. Until the city substantially reduces its homicide and other crimes rates, people will continue to view the city as dangerous and be reluctant to stay or move here. [Read More]
