The day after the Parkland High School massacre in Florida, a student at Clarksburg High School in Maryland was arrested and accused of bringing a loaded gun to class.
Eighteen-year-old Alwin Chen reportedly told police that he regularly concealed firearms in school, even wearing body armor to “protect himself.” This week the governor is praising school officials and law-enforcement and has made it very clear he is against arming classroom teachers, supports banning bump stocks and is endorsing legislation to remove firearms from those convicted of domestic violence. Parkland kids can protest, but they don’t know what they are talking about (USA Today)
Later this month, high school kids will hold big demonstrations in Washington and elsewhere to demand gun control in the wake of the Parkland shootings. That’s fine by me. I disagree with the thrust of what they want to do as a matter of policy, but it’s a free country.
My problem is with the resurgence of an old American tradition of celebrating young people as inherently wiser and more moral than adults. There are really three problems with the fetishization of youth in politics. First it’s based on a faulty premise: That young people have a radically or uniquely superior insight into political affairs.
This is an ancient confusion. It usually hinges misinterpreting the fact that young people see the world with fresh eyes, as it were. [Read More]
