WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Montgomery County is weighing in on a legal battle over union dues. This comes as an Illinois man will argue before the Supreme Court Monday that requiring him to pay dues is unconstitutional.
The county is appealing to the high court to uphold a law requiring all government employees, including teachers, to pay union dues.
“Our fear is that if dues are voluntary, the union becomes less incentivized to work together toward mutual goals,” said Montgomery County Council President Hans Riemer.
The Illinois man works for the state but is not it a member of the union representing state employees. The law says he needs to pay dues because he’s covered by the contract negotiated by the union.
Riemer said if the court rules this dues requirement is unconstitutional, it will weaken unions by forcing them to spend more time chasing dues than improving services.
