In blow to Trump, Supreme Court won’t hear appeal of DACA ruling (NBC News)

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear the Trump administration’s appeal of a federal judge’s ruling that requires the government to keep the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program going.

Under a lower court order that remains in effect, the Department of Homeland Security must continue to accept renewal applications from the roughly 700,000 young people who are currently enrolled in the program, known as DACA. The administration had intended to shut the program down by March 5, but that deadline is now largely meaningless. [Read More]

Fairfax County police begin rolling out body-worn cameras to officers for pilot program (Fox 5 DC)

Fairfax County police have released new video from body-worn cameras that show officers’ encounters on the job. This comes days after the department launched a six-month pilot program to deploy more than 200 cameras into the field.

One of the police body camera footage was recorded last Friday during the aftermath of a car crash off of Braddock Road. Police say a man was driving while intoxicated. It was his first offense. [Read More]

Students claim square root symbol looks like gun, sparks police investigation (KRON 4)

A student at Oberlin High School in Louisiana was investigated and his home was searched after he allegedly made comments interpreted as possible terrorist threats when comparing the square root math symbol to a gun.

According to local news station KATC, an investigation by the Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday revealed the incident began when one student drew the square root symbol while completing a math problem in class.

Another student then made a comment on the likeness of the sign to a gun, sparking opinions and comments from multiple students. [Read More]

Terry McAuliffe: ‘Who Better to Take on Trump Than Me?’ (Free Beacon)

Democrat Terry McAuliffe said he would be the party’s best choice to “take on” President Donald Trump in 2020.

“Who better to take on Trump than me?” McAuliffe said when asked by the Washington Free Beacon about a potential 2020 run for president, strongly indicating he will indeed throw his hat in the ring.

The former Virginia governor, Democratic National Committee chairman, and longtime party fundraiser’s name is regularly included amongst the crowded field of Democrats thinking of running for president. [Read More]

Southern Poverty Law Center: Hate groups on the rise in Maryland, nationwide (The Washington Post)

The number of hate groups across the country grew in 2017 for the third year in a row, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported last week, and the legal advocacy group counted 19 in Maryland, up from 18 the year before.

The SPLC, based in Montgomery, Ala., counted 954 active hate groups nationwide, a 4 percent increase from 2016.

Most of the growth occurred in neo-Nazi, anti-Muslim and black-nationalist groups, the center said. It attributed the increase to white supremacists energized by the presidency of Donald Trump and black-nationalist groups rising in response. [Read More]
