House Passes Short-Term Spending Bill, Setting Up Shutdown Battle in Senate [The New York Times]

The House approved on Thursday night a stopgap spending bill to keep the government open past Friday, but Senate Democrats — angered by President Trump’s vulgar aspersions and a lack of progress on a broader budget and immigration deal — appeared ready to block the measure.

The successful 230-to-197 vote in the House, where the bill’s chances had appeared in question until shortly beforehand, provided only a faint glimmer of hope that a crisis could be averted before much of the government exhausts its funds at midnight on Friday. The bill would fund the government through Feb. 16.

But in the Senate, at least a dozen Democratic votes will be needed to approve the measure on Friday, and there is little chance those will materialize. Democrats are intent on securing concessions that would, among other things, protect from deportation young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children, increase domestic spending, aid Puerto Rico and bolster the government’s response to the opioid crisis. Trump says Democrats ‘are needed’ to avert government shutdown with just hours until deadline [Fox News]

Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) says he is optimistic that Congress will get the votes to avoid a government shutdown.

President Trump warned early Friday there could be a “shutdown coming” if Senate Democrats block the vote to pass the short-term spending bill that would keep the government funded.

The House of Representatives passed the stop-gap spending bill that would avert a full government shutdown late Thursday. The bill, also known as a continuing resolution (CR), was sent to the Senate for a vote following its approval. [Read More]

Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis is out, Mayor Catherine Pugh announces [Fox 5]

The head of the Baltimore Police Department is being replaced, Mayor Catherine Pugh’s office announced on Friday.

Pugh said Kevin Davis would be replaced by Deputy Commissioner Darryl DeSousa as the commissioner of the department.

“As I have made clear, reducing violence and restoring the confidence of our citizens in their police officers is my highest priority,” Pugh said in part of a written statement. “The fact is, we are not achieving the pace of progress that our residents have every right to expect in the weeks since we ended what was nearly a record year for homicides in the City of Baltimore.” [Read More]

The Dow’s 31% gain during Trump’s first year is the best since FDR [CNBC]

Donald Trump lifted the Dow Jones industrial average in his first year in office more than any other president since Franklin Roosevelt.

The Dow has surged more than 31 percent since Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 2017. That marks the index’s best performance during a president’s first year since Roosevelt. The Dow skyrocketed 96.5 percent during Roosevelt’s first year in office. [Read More]

The original feminism is pro-life [Washington Examiner]

Jan. 22 is the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States. That’s 45 years and more than 60 million yet-to-be born children being legally terminated by their parents.

Looking at modern feminism, we see that instead of its early emphasis on the rights of women to equal pay and equal votes, it has been narrowed to a defense of abortion rights. Feminists who oppose abortion are often drowned out of conversation with their pro-abortion rights sisters. The result is that few people are aware that the founders of the women’s movement were, without known exception, opposed to abortion. These activists saw it as a symptom of women’s oppression, not a solution to it. Today’s pro-life feminists agree. [Read More]
