NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) – A Republican candidate has survived a recount in Virginia’s 28th House District in the Fredericksburg area, ending a string of four recounts for tight House elections.
Campaign officials said Tuesday that Republican Bob Thomas beat Democrat Joshua Cole by 73 votes. Thomas had won November’s election by 82 votes.
Tuesday’s tally was confirmed by Cole campaign manager Eric Sundberg and the House Republican leadership.
A court challenge is still pending over some ballots assigned to the wrong districts. But party control in the House of Delegates now likely hinges on whoever wins the 94th District in Newport News.
Officials will draw names next week to settle a tie in that race. Depending on who wins, Republicans could maintain power by one seat or have to share power with Democrats.
