LISTEN: BYRON YORK: Roy Moore Was Never A Popular Statewide Figure. Many Viewed Him As An Embarrassment.

  • Byron York‏ @ByronYork 39m39 minutes ago: Take Roy Moore’s narrow 2012 victory, toss in sex allegations and an insane media environment, and you get last night.
  • Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 2h2 hours ago: The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election. I was right! Roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!
  • Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump: Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!
  • Doug Jones declared victor in Alabama race for Senate; Roy Moore may seek recount. BIRMINGHAM, ALA. — In a stunning setback for the Republican Party, Democrat Doug Jones was elected Alabama’s next senator Tuesday, flipping a deeply red state after a campaign that showcased the increasing power of sexual misconduct allegations and the limits of President Trump’s political influence. Jones’s victory in a part of the Deep South that has not elected a Democratic senator since 1992 was a dramatic repudiation of his opponent, Roy Moore, a former state judge twice removed from office. Moore responded to allegations that he made sexual advances on teenagers when he was in his 30s by describing his campaign as a “spiritual battle” against a conspiracy of Republican and Democratic leaders in Washington.
  • How does the Alabama Election Result reflect on President Trump? The result was framed as a blow to President Trump. For his part, the president issued Jones congratulations. “The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win,” Trump tweeted. There were more than 22,000 write-ins.
  • Doug Jones’ Alabama victory trims the Republicans’ already narrow Senate majority, endangers Trump’s agenda (Reuters) — The stunning upset makes Jones the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Alabama in a quarter-century and will trim the Republicans’ already narrow Senate majority to 51-49, opening the door for Democrats to possibly retake the chamber in next year’s congressional elections. U.S. stock futures, Treasury yields and the dollar dipped on Wednesday on the news of Jones’ victory which could endanger Trump’s policy agenda.
