WASHINGTON (WMAL) – It gets dark early this time of year, but the National Zoo is aglow with Christmas lights of every color as the 11th annual Zoo Lights has returned.

“It’s just a really wonderful way to get off and get out of your house, work off that holiday meal, stroll up and down the zoo with your family. Look up. Enjoy the lights, and really have a great time outdoors during the holiday season,” said zoo spokesperson Annalisa Meyer.

Old favorites are back including the laser light show on the side of the elephant house, snowless tubing and the zoo choo choo train.

New attractions this year include a free glow in the dark play zone for kids in the Great Meadow, a glow in the dark lounge for parents and the GRUMP Holiday Market featuring items crafted by local artisans from Dec. 15 to 17. Every night CulturalDC’s SPACE4 mobile art gallery will be open.|

Zoo Lights runs through New Year’s Day. The zoo is extending its hours through 9 p.m. for the duration. The zoo’s closed Christmas Eve, Christmas day and New Year’s Eve.

Every Saturday there will be free shuttles from the Woodley Park Metro station to the zoo.
