Two Republicans clinched narrow victories over their Democratic opponents after votes were certified by the Stafford County Electoral Board Tuesday afternoon. But the Nov. 7 election results in Stafford may face additional challenges before they are fully settled.

The official vote tallies, which are headed to Richmond, show Mark Dudenhefer beating incumbent Laura Sellers for the Garrisonville District Board of Supervisors seat by 12 votes and Bob Thomas edging out Joshua Cole by 82 votes for the 28th District seat in the House of Delegates.

Still, the margins—less than half a percent—likely ensure that both races are headed for a recount at the county’s expense.

The winners were announced after the electoral board certified 40 of 50 provisional ballots cast in last week’s election and voted to disqualify 55 absentee ballots that the office received the day after the election.

Voters may cast provisional ballots for a number of reasons, including showing up to a polling place without a valid ID. Those voters had until today to make a case for their votes to be counted. [Read More]
