Rockville, Md. — A Montgomery County Police officer shot and seriously injured a person Sunday night after receiving a call for an assault in progress at the Stoneymill Square shopping center.
Police received a call from a driver stating that an unknown SUV was ramming his vehicle.
The man shot and injured was the SUV driver. He was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
“He was the driver of the assaulting vehicle,” Capt. Paul Starks told the Washington Post. The man shot was described as male, but no name or information about his age was immediately available.
The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
The shooting occurred at about 8:20 p.m. in the 12200 block of Veirs Mill Road about a half-mile west of Connecticut Avenue, the police department said.
It was unclear why the officer chose to fire. The circumstances surrounding the assault remained under investigation.
Following protocol, the involved officer, a ten-tear veteran of the department, was placed on administrative leave. His name will soon be released.
