LOS ANGELES (AP) – Tom Petty, an old-fashioned rock superstar and everyman who drew upon the Byrds, the Beatles and other bands he worshipped as a boy and produced new classics such as “Free Fallin,’ “Refugee” and “American Girl,” has died. He was 66. Petty passed away Monday night at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles after he suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu, California, spokeswoman Carla Sacks said.

6am – A         MEDIA REACTION TO VEGAS SHOOTING:

  • CBS executive fired after saying Las Vegas victims didn’t deserve sympathy. CBS fired a legal executive Monday after she wrote on Facebook that she was not “sympathetic” to the victims of the mass shooting in Las Vegas. “I’m actually not even sympathetic [because] country music fans often are Republican gun toters,” former executive Hayley Geftman-Gold wrote.  “This individual, who was with us for approximately one year, violated the standards of our company and is no longer an employee of CBS,” the network said in a statement Monday. “Her views as expressed on social media are deeply unacceptable to all of us at CBS. Our hearts go out to the victims in Las Vegas and their families,” the network wrote. The Daily Caller first flagged Geftman-Gold’s post Monday morning.
  • Brian Williams Pushes Gun Control During Interview With Blumenthal. “Why don’t we act? What is the problem? What was it about first graders losing their lives [in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary] that wasn’t sad enough to result in changes?” Williams asked. Williams’ guest, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.), immediately blamed the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other special interests, saying that their “stranglehold” on the Congressional process undermined efforts to pass gun control legislation.
  • NBC reporter Cal Perry called for gun control Monday, saying that it has become impossible to report “just ‘facts’ about gun violence.”  @CalNBC: Been a journo for a while now. It has become impossible to report just, “facts” about gun violence. The fact is America needs gun control. “20 innocent children didn’t make it home for Christmas in December of 2014 and nothing changed. What debate is taking place that I missed?” Perry tweeted shortly later, referencing the December 2012 school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton Conn., which resulted in the deaths of 20 children and six adult staff members.
  • Brokaw: Gun Conversations Become ‘Emotional’ Between Gun Owners and People Saying There’s ‘Reasonable Middle Ground’

6am – B         San Juan mayor to attend Puerto Rico briefing with Trump today. (The Hill) – San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz has indicated she will attend an event during President Trump’s scheduled Tuesday visit to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico after the two have publicly criticized each other’s responses to the storms, according to a White House spokesperson. According to the itinerary released Monday evening by the White House, the president and first lady Melania Trump will travel to Puerto Rico’s capital of San Juan to receive a briefing about the relief and rescue efforts after Hurricane Maria brought damage and destruction to the island last month. A White House spokesperson said in an email Monday night that Cruz has indicated she will attend this briefing.

6am – C         Interior watchdog opens investigation into Zinke’s travel. (Politico) — The Interior Department’s inspector general’s office has opened an investigation into Secretary Ryan Zinke’s use of taxpayer-funded charter planes, a spokeswoman said Monday. The watchdog has “received numerous complaints” and launched its investigation late last week, said Nancy K. DiPaolo, spokeswoman for Interior’s Office of the Inspector General. Zinke is one of several members of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet to face questions over his expensive travel, along with EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and former HHS Secretary Tom Price, who resigned Friday. The secretary has flown on government-owned or -chartered aircraft several times this year, including one $12,000 trip from Las Vegas to an airport near his hometown in Montana and another trip in the Caribbean, as POLITICO reported last week.

6am – D/E     DEM REACTION ON VEGAS:

  • Democrats Immediately Call For Gun Control After Las Vegas Shooting
  • PELOSI: Speaker Ryan, it’s time for action. Congress must create a Select Committee on Gun Violence.
  • “We need a president who recognizes that we have a gun violence problem and will work towards solutions,” Mark Kelly says
  • “Your thoughts and prayers aren’t going to stop next shooting,” Mark Kelly says. “Only action and leadership will do that.”
  • Clinton talks gun legislation immediately following massacre. (CNN) Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, amid the fallout of the massacre in Las Vegas, turned the political spotlight on a gun bill that’s currently making its way through the House. “The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get,” she tweeted Monday morning. She wrote later, “Our grief isn’t enough. We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again.”

6am – F         CUBAN ATTACKS ON AMERICAN PERSONNEL HIT SPY NETWORK.

AP sources: US spies in Havana hit by bizarre health attacks. HAVANA (AP) — Frightening attacks on U.S. personnel in Havana struck the heart of America’s spy network in Cuba, with intelligence operatives among the first and most severely affected victims, The Associated Press has learned. It wasn’t until U.S. spies, posted to the embassy under diplomatic cover, reported hearing bizarre sounds and experiencing even stranger physical effects that the United States realized something was wrong, individuals familiar with the situation said. While the attacks started within days of President Donald Trump’s surprise election in November, the precise timeline remains unclear, including whether intelligence officers were the first victims hit or merely the first victims to report it. The U.S. has called the situation “ongoing.” To date, the Trump administration largely has described the 21 victims as U.S. embassy personnel or “members of the diplomatic community.” That description suggested only bona fide diplomats and their family members were struck, with no logical motivation beyond disrupting U.S.-Cuban relations.

7am – A         RIP TOM PETTY:

  • Legendary rocker Tom Petty has died at 66. Rock and roll legend Tom Petty has a music career that dates back to the 1960s and includes multiple bands along with solo work.
  • LAPD apologises for ‘inconvenience’ after prematurely reporting. Tom Petty had died. The Los Angeles Police Department has apologized for prematurely reporting the death of singer Tom Petty. Petty was found in full cardiac arrest in his Malibu, California, home on Sunday and rushed to the hospital before being taken off life support, but he remained alive with no brain function on Monday evening before passing away later, according to his family. ‘The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly [sic] provided to some media sources,’ the department tweeted late Monday. However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting,’ the statement continued.

7am – B/C INTERVIEW — RON HOSKO – former assistant director of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division and currently the ‎President at Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund

  • TOPIC: Analysis of the latest on the Vegas shooting:
  • Vegas Sheriff Lombardo: 58 dead, over 500 injured (Fox News) – A gunman turned a Las Vegas concert into a killing field Sunday night from his perch on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, using at least 10 guns to rain down a steady stream of fire, murdering at least 59 people and injuring more than 520 others in the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history. The suspect, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada. Police initially sought a woman believed to be Paddock’s roommate, Marilou Danley, as a “person of interest.” Detectives later made contact with her, and “do not believe she is involved with the shooting on The Strip.” Stephen Paddock carried out the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Here’s what authorities know so far about the 64-year-old Nevada man.Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said an “excess of 10 rifles” were found in the room, but did not immediately reveal a motive, saying “I can’t get into the mind of a psychopath at this point.” Paddock reportedly had about 23 guns in his hotel room, according to police in an evening press conference.
  • Suspected Las Vegas gunman’s dad reportedly escaped prison in the ’60s and ended up on the FBI’s most-wanted list (NY Post) — The father of Las Vegas madman Stephen Paddock was a “psychopath” himself — a bank robber who escaped federal prison in the late 1960s and landed on the FBI’s most-wanted list, according to reports. Paddock’s dad was serial felon Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, according to the Daily Mail and a tweet from NBC. Benjamin Paddock had been locked up in 1960 for robbing an Arizona bank, escaped in 1968 and spent nearly three years on the run before the FBI caught up to him in Las Vegas in 1971, at which point he tried to run down an agent with his car, according to archival editions of the Tuscon Daily Citizen.
  • FBI: No ISIS Connection to Las Vegas Shooter (Daily Beast) — The Federal Bureau of Investigations on Monday announced that they’ve discovered no connections between suspected Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock and the Islamic State. “We have determined to this point no connection with the international terrorist group,” said the FBI special agent in charge of the Las Vegas investigation. “We will continue to work with our partners to ensure that this is factually, thoroughly, and absolutely investigated to be able to bring comfort and peace back to this community.” Without providing even a shred of evidence, ISIS claimed responsibility for Sunday night’s mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed at least 50 people and injured hundreds of others. Without naming Paddock, the terror organization said in a statement, via its news agency, that he “executed the operation in response to calls to target countries of the coalition.” In recent months, ISIS has claimed some attacks that were ultimately unrelated to their group: For example, the group claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a Philippines casino that later turned out to have been perpetrated for financial motivations by a debt-ridden former public servant.

7am – D         MARIAH CAREY HAS AWKWARD INTERVIEW WITH PIERS MORGAN, LOUNGING BY A CHRISTMAS TREE

  • Mariah Carey was prepared to talk about her holiday tour as she lounged beside a Christmas tree when Morgan broke the news.
  • Piers Morgan slammed for asking Mariah Carey about Las Vegas shooting. Furious “Good Morning Britain” viewers have slammed the show’s “bizarre” interview with pop diva Mariah Carey as “tasteless” and “unfair” after the star was put on the spot about the horrific shootings in Las Vegas. The “Hero” singer was due to chat with presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about her Christmas tour, and was suitably perched on her sofa alongside her huge Christmas tree.

7am – E         INTERVIEW — TREVOR MATICH – WMAL’s Redskins Analyst, Comcast SportsNet co-host and former Redskins long snapper

  • Washington Redskins (2-2)   20   VS  Kansas City Chiefs (4-0)  29

8am – A         INTERVIEW – DAN BONGINO – former Secret Service agent and author of new book “Protecting the President” AND Bongino worked with the New York City Police Department for four years

• PELOSI: .@SpeakerRyan, it’s time for action. Congress must create a Select Committee on Gun Violence.
    • “We need a president who recognizes that we have a gun violence problem and will work towards solutions,” Mark Kelly says
    • Hillary Clinton slams NRA, gun silencer bill in wake of Las Vegas shooting.  “The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get,” wrote Clinton on Twitter Monday morning after first saying she was grieving with “the victims, those who lost loved ones, the responders, & all affected by this cold-blooded massacre.” “Our grief isn’t enough. We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again,” she added. It appeared Clinton was referencing the Hearing Protection Act, introduced by Reps. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., and John Carter, R-Texas, in January and now part of the omnibus Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, a bill self-described “to provide for the preservation of sportsmen’s heritage and enhance recreation opportunities on Federal land, and for other purposes.” The Hearing Protection Act removes silencers from the Internal Revenue Code’s definition of “firearms,” which could ultimately make it easier for individuals to purchase them without the background checks required for firearm buyers. It further eliminates a $200 tax on the sound suppressors.

8am – B/C   PUERTO RICO:

  • San Juan mayor to attend Puerto Rico briefing with Trump today. San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz has indicated she will attend an event during President Trump’s scheduled Tuesday visit to hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico after the two have publicly criticized each other’s responses to the storms, according to a White House spokesperson.
  • Geraldo From Puerto Rico: ‘NYT Hatred Of Trump Allows Reckless Lies.’ Reporting from Puerto Rico, Geraldo Rivera is challenging the media’s narrative of a lackluster response by the Trump administration to the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. “Interviewed MD’s yesterday There is #NoCholera in #PuertoRico Shame on @paulkrugman & #NYT Hatred of @realDonaldTrump allows reckless lies” Geraldo tweeted late Sunday night in response to a Krugman allegation that Trump was to blame for a cholera outbreak that was never confirmed on the island.
  • Trump administration announces support for bill criminalizing abortion after 20 weeks.  The Trump administration formally backed a House bill Monday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks.  The administration “strongly supports” the bill and “applauds the House of Representatives for continuing its efforts to secure critical pro-life protections,” the Office of Management and Budget wrote in a statement of administration policy.  The bill, sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), will come up for a vote in the House on Tuesday. It would make it a crime to perform or attempt an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the possibility of a fine, up to five years in prison or both.  There are exceptions for rape, incest or to save the life of the woman, and the bill wouldn’t penalize women for seeking abortions after 20 weeks.

8am – D         INTERVIEW —  LARRY KUDLOW – CNBC Senior Contributor and host of The Larry Kudlow Show on WMAL Saturdays at 7 pm and author of “JFK and the Reagan Revolution: A Secret History of American Prosperity”

  • RAND PAUL KNOCKS TAX PLAN: ‘This is a GOP tax plan? Possibly 30% of middle class gets a tax hike? I hope the final details are better than this.’
  • Kudlow op-ed: Trump has an incentive-packed tax plan like JFK and Reagan
  • Trump’s New Fed Chair Speculation: President Donald Trump is in a position to reshape the Federal Reserve as Janet Yellen’s 4-year turn at the chair expires in February.  Trump could re-nominate Yellen, but he might not. During his campaign, he said Yellen should be “ashamed of herself,” but more recently said she has “done a good job.” Yellen will remain on the board as a governor until her 14-year term expires in 2024.
  • Tom Price is out for expensive private planes and now Interior Secretary Zinke under scrutiny: The Interior Department’s inspector general’s office has opened an investigation into Secretary Ryan Zinke’s use of taxpayer-funded charter planes, a spokeswoman said Monday. The watchdog has “received numerous complaints” and launched its investigation late last week, said Nancy K. DiPaolo, spokeswoman for Interior’s Office of the Inspector General.
