5am – D NFL / ANTHEM PROTESTS:
- Most Americans disapprove of NFL player protests: ESPN poll (Fox Business) — More than half of Americans concur with President Trump’s disapproval of ongoing NFL national anthem protests, according to the results of an ESPN Opens a New Window. poll released Friday. Fifty-one percent of respondents said they either somewhat or strongly disapproved of national anthem protests by NFL players, while 39% said they approved. The divide was smaller among those who identified themselves as dedicated NFL fans, with 48% saying they approved while 47% disapproved. The results also suggest that ongoing player protests could impact league viewership, as 40% of respondents said they were less interested in the NFL due to the protests. Meanwhile, 14% said they gained interest in the league because of the issue, while the largest portion, 43%, said it had no impact. The poll, commissioned by ESPN and conducted by Global Strategy Group, asked more than 1,000 adults around the country a series of questions related to the NFL protest controversy.
- NFL Fan Poll: 80 Percent Say They’ll Watch Less Football, 53 Percent Support Trump (breitbart) – The National Football League (NFL) may have more than a passing controversy on its hands as it continues to grapple with fans’ reaction to the players and staff “take a knee” protest during the national anthem before games. Yahoo Finance headlined its story about its poll with a finding of 62 percent of respondents who said they will watch less football
- Legend Jackie Mason slams kneelers: ‘The more money they make, the more they hate this country’ Comic legend Jackie Mason called out NFL players and national anthem protesters for the “huge hullabaloo” they have created. In an exclusive video clip for Breitbart News, the 86 year-old tackled the issue of the football players taking a knee during pre-game singing of “The Star Spangled Banner.” “Now I’m saying to myself, ‘why is everybody so disturbed about this?’” Mason said. “Obviously they feel there’s some discrimination in this country and they’re talking about discrimination. This is their way of expressing it.”
- “I’m tired of the cameras in my face all the time,” Alejandro Villanueva said. (USA Today) — BALTIMORE — Alejandro Villanueva didn’t intend on becoming one of the symbols of the national anthem protests in the NFL. Yet a week after the typically low-keyed tackle was the only Pittsburgh Steelers player to participate in the national anthem before a game at Chicago, Villanueva vented about being used as a tool. “I’m tired of the cameras in my face all the time,” Villanueva said after a 26-9 victory against the Baltimore Ravens. “It’s crazy. It’s sad, because we had the Baltimore Ravens-Pittsburgh Steelers game and everybody is focused on the pregame procedures. “I thought the team tried their best last week and this week to handle this week, but unfortunately, we don’t always get it right.”
- Marshawn Lynch wears “Everybody vs. Trump” shirt (The Hill) — Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch wore a shirt that read “EVERYBODY VS TRUMP” as he arrived at his team’s game Sunday. Images of him wearing the shirt came amid ongoing protests in the NFL following President Trump’s attacks on players who kneel during the national anthem. Lynch has been sitting during the national anthem this season, but has not given a direct reason for the move, according to Yahoo Sports.
- Fans Boo As Ravens Kneel Before, Stand During National Anthem BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Some tense moments at Sunday’s Ravens versus Steelers matchup, before the actual game began. The country continues to grapple with whether NFL players should protest during the national anthem — and if the president should have a say in it. After more than a week of tension among President Trump, the NFL, and fans, many who came here were paying close attention to what would happen on the field before the first play. Along with purple, some fans came to Sunday’s home game, wearing red, white and blue. The color clash matching the nationwide conversation. Fans don’t all agree on whether recent protests are appropriate. The crowd booed, as members of the team, linked arms and took to their knees to pray.
- NBA IS RECOMMENDING THAT PLAYERS STAND FOR THE ANTHEM: The NBA is recommending teams address fans or show videos expressing themes of unity before their first home games, while reminding them of the rule that players must stand for the national anthem. A memo was sent to teams Friday, a day after Commissioner Adam Silver said he expected players would stand for the anthem.
- MOMA TO DISPLAY KAEPERNICK’S JERSEY: Colin Kaepernick is still without a job nearly one year after starting his on-field protest against police brutality. And although historic efforts have prompted many sports fans to burn his jersey, it seems the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is seeking to put his uniform on display for the rest of the year. The MoMA will reportedly place Kaepernick’s jersey in its current exhibit in New York.
- KAEPERNICK’S QUESTIONABLE DONATION: The Colin Kaepernick Foundation donated in April $25,000 to Assata’s Daughters, a Chicago “direct action” resistance organization honoring Assata Shakur, who escaped prison and fled to Cuba after being found guilty in the 1973 murder of Officer Werner Foerster. The grant includes $2,500 for CopWatch, a program that trains volunteers to follow and video police, and $15,000 for teen training, part of the group’s commitment to “develop and train young people, ages 4-19, in the Black queer feminist tradition and in the spirit of Assata.”
- TWO HIGH SCHOOLERS KICKED OFF TEAM AFTER KNEELING DURING ANTHEM: Cedric Ingram-Lewis raised his fist while cousin Larry McCullough knelt during the anthem ahead of the team’s game against Providence Classical. After the anthem ended, head coach Ronnie Mitchem instructed them to take off their uniforms and kicked them off the team. Mitchem is a former Marine and pastor who started the church-based football program in Crosby six years ago.
- THREE DOLPHINS KNEEL FOR ANTHEM, STAND FOR GOD SAVE THE QUEEN: Three Miami Dolphins players mirrored one of the NFL protests from last week as they kneeled for the U.S. national anthem but stood for “God Save The Queen” at a game in London.
5am – E PRICE RESIGNS: Tom Price, President Donald Trump’s secretary of Health and Human Services, resigned from his post Friday after it was revealed that he had repeatedly chartered private planes for government travel.
TRUMP ALLEGEDLY REPRIMANDED PRICE FOR 2 HOURS: President Trump sternly reprimanded Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price just hours before Price resigned from his post. Trump spent two hours on Friday chastising Price in the Oval Office for his use of private and military aircraft the past few months, which cost taxpayers approximately $1 million, people familiar with the meeting told the New York Times. Trump then spoke to reporters, teasing a decision on Price’s future Friday night. About two hours later, the White House issued a brief statement saying that Price submitted a letter of resignation.

Shawn Arruti told The Associated Press on Sunday that the former football hero and celebrity criminal defendant has one approved residential plan, and it doesn’t currently include a move to Florida or any other state. Arruti says that could change in the future. Simpson previously said he wanted to live in Florida, where he used to live and where he has friends and two children.

- SCOTUS: Supreme Court Kicks Off Annual Term Filled with Big Cases. WASHINGTON, DC — The Supreme Court on Monday begins an annual term that will tackle a host of hot-button issues, the impact of which the nation will feel for many years to come. The Supreme Court typically hears slightly more than 70 cases per year and summarily reverses lower courts in several more cases without hearing oral arguments, for a total of close to 80 opinions over a nine-month period. Of the 39 cases the Court has already accepted for review, at least 14 are newsworthy, and six in particular are major cases — with more to be added to the docket in the coming three months.
- The six headliner cases at this point are:
- 1.) Perhaps the most talked-about case for the term at the moment is Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, where the Supreme Court will consider whether the government is forcing a Christian baker to customize the design of a wedding cake to celebrate same-sex marriage violates that Christian’s rights under either the Free Speech Clause or the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.
- 2.) In Janus v. AFSCME, the Court will determine whether forcing government employees to pay union fees that go to collective-bargaining arrangements violates their free-speech rights under the First Amendment. If the Court sides with the employees (as is expected), this will be a major blow to unions and overrule a major 1977 pro-union case and has implications for unions’ ability to fund left-wing political activities as well.
- 3.) In Carpenter v. United States, the justices to decide whether taking without a search warrant the cell phone tower data that records the movements of individual cell phone users violates the Fourth Amendment. This could be a seminal case in determining what the Constitution requires in terms of personal privacy in light of newer technologies.
- 4.) In Gill v. Whitford, the Supreme Court will examine at what point politics play such a large role — when lawmakers make political calculations in drawing legislative redistricting plans after each census — that the plan is a “political gerrymander” that violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Another issue in that case is whether such claims are never justiciable in court because it is impossible to effectively remove politics from politicians’ decision-making.
- 5.) In Collins v. Virginia, the justices will determine whether the Fourth Amendment allows police officers to approach a vehicle parked next to a house on private property without a search warrant. The Court has previously held that there is an “automobile exception” to the Constitution’s usual warrant requirement because it would be impractical to get a judge to issue a search warrant every time a police officer approaches a car. The question here is whether that exception applies when the car is actually next to a home that would clearly be protected by the Fourth Amendment.
- 6.) And in the only piece that rivals Masterpiece Cakeshop, in Trump v. IRAP, the Court will consider whether President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 13780 — the temporary travel ban from six terror-prone nations and its cap on refugees entering this country — is illegal either under federal law or the Constitution’s Establishment Clause. Now that the timeframe for those issues has expired, a second issue is whether these consolidate challenges are now moot, in which case the Court may not even hear argument and simply throw out the case. There are many more noteworthy cases, several of which were 4-4 tie votes last term before Justice Neil Gorsuch was confirmed as the successor to Justice Antonin Scalia, which the full nine-justice Court will rehear and decide.

The gunman, identified as Stephen Paddock, was later killed during a standoff with police, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters. NBC and others reported that Paddock was 64. The carnage surpassed the death toll of 49 people at an Orlando nightclub when a gunman believed inspired by the Islamic State opened fire in June 2016.
