Virginia Delegate Candidates ‘Debate’ Online

Del. Robert G. Marshall has refused to publicly debate with Democrat Danica Roem. Instead, the two delegate candidates for the 13 district of Virginia are voicing their opinions about a variety of issues on a website, via the League of Women Voters. Antonio Olivo of The Washington Post details more about the online ‘debate’ in his article, In heated Va. House race, candidates ‘debate’ by answering online questions:

Voters in one of the most heated races in the country curious to know how the two candidates fare against one another in a debate won’t get to see that after Virginia Del. Robert G. Marshall (R) declined to participate in any such forums.

But, anyone who checks out the website for the League of Women Voters’ Prince William County chapter can now read prepared statements sent by Marshall and Democrat Danica Roem to questions about transportation funding, ethics and legislative priorities for the 13th District.

The five sets of questions and answers for the Nov. 7 House of Delegates election aren’t quite the same as the lively back-and-forth discussion that can happen when candidates with polar-opposite views on social issues and public policy stand in front of a crowd with a vested interest in the outcome.

But that’s exactly what Marshall said he wanted to avoid when he turned down an invitation to a Sept. 21 candidates forum sponsored by the nonpartisan League of Women Voters, the Prince William County chapter of the NAACP and Prince William Committee of 100 electoral educational forum. [Read More]
